Presentation on theme: "Հայաստանի Հանրապետություն, հունիս / հուլիս 2009"— Presentation transcript:

1 Հայաստանի Հանրապետություն, հունիս / հուլիս 2009
AGORA Overview This presentation should be accompanied by live demonstrations of the resources – a page of links are included for you to use from within a Web browser on the desk top of your computer. See: workshop-links.html If the network seems to be running slow, then screen captures are provided to give an overview of the resources. If these are used and live demonstrations are not possible, then this module may not take as much time as planned (the live demonstrations can take a long time to do – be prepared to be waiting for pages to download and display. It’s a good idea to think of some things in advance to say when this happens – notes are given for guidance in this. Armenia, June/July 2009 Հայաստանի Հանրապետություն, հունիս / հուլիս 2009

2 In this Tutorial You Will Learn
Welcome to AGORA In this Tutorial You Will Learn what AGORA offers, main features, and appropriate use how to open AGORA, log in and navigate to find journals and download articles how to use CAB Abstracts and publishers’ websites to find citations and download articles

3 What Is AGORA?

4 AGORA = Access to Global Online Research in Agriculture

5 AGORA is Evolving Changes to the website may occur.
Technical difficulties occasionally arise. If your password doesn’t work the first time, don’t attempt to log in more than 3 times in a row. Any ongoing trouble with AGORA, (describe problem and include print screen). A good thing to keep in mind with AGORA and all other electronic resources is to expect the unexpected. All electronic resources change frequently so features may not be where you last saw them or additional features may have appeared. Also, since these are electronic resources, they are prone to mechanical difficulties, connection problems, hardware and software issues, and changing levels of access unlike paper resources. If you are having trouble, check that you are logged in correctly and that all of your equipment is working properly. You may need to reboot your computer, refresh the page you’re working on, close and reopen your browser, or clear your browser’s cache (the list of visited pages stored on your computer). Be patient and try again if you cannot access something you know you should have access to. Also, be aware that you do not have access to everything. AGORA only gives access to a certain subset of a publisher’s journals though all journals are listed on the publisher’s website. The journals with full-text access indicated may not apply to you. Check AGORA for a definitive list of available journals. If you are trying to access a resource and it asks for another log in, this indicates it is not an AGORA-accessible resource. DO NOT enter your AGORA password again. Also, if you are attempting to log in to AGORA initially, do not attempt to do so more than three times or you will be locked out of the system. If you are continuing to have trouble with AGORA (not the publisher’s websites or the bibliographic databases contained within it), use the Print Screen button on your keyboard, paste the resulting image of the screen showing the problem into a Wordpad or other word processing document, describe the problem in detail and the information to someone will try and assist you. Despite these caveats, there is a great deal that you can do on with AGORA. It is a powerful resource for your research, study and teaching needs.

45 2. How to Use CAB Abstracts

46 What Is CAB Abstracts? Internationally recognized database of information for applied agriculture and life sciences Covers research and development literature from thousands of international serials Provides abstracts (brief article descriptions) and links to full-text articles CAB Abstracts, the internationally recognized database of information for applied agriculture and life sciences, is generously provided by CABI Publishing, the publishing arm of CAB International. CAB Abstracts covers research and development literature in the fields of agriculture, forestry, human health, human nutrition, animal health and the management and conservation of natural resources. Thousands of serials are scanned annually to ensure only quality, peer reviewed research is included. CAB Abstracts allows you to search for specific articles or subjects from a range of journals rather than just from one journal or one publisher. The CAB Abstracts database only gives the publication information and brief descriptions for articles; for full-text you will need to return to AGORA.

47 CAB Abstracts and AGORA
CAB generously offers a subset of CAB Abstracts to AGORA users It also provides full-text articles found in AGORA Covers about 80% of journals in AGORA You must log in to AGORA to gain access to full-text articles and must log in to search CAB. 82 3. Navigating Publishers’ Sites

83 Publishers’ Websites Vary
All publishers’ websites are slightly different and even journals within a publisher’s site can vary in appearance and features. Identical features might be accessed differently or will be located in other places. Journal coverage (PDF and/or HTML full-text) is generally from 1997 onwards. Not all publishers offer the same features (e.g., some have table of contents alerting, some do not). Of course, with all these features there are caveats to keep in mind. All publishers’ websites are created and maintained by each separate publisher not by AGORA. Therefore, all the sites are slightly different and may or may not offer the same features or the same types of access to those features. Even within the publisher’s website, each journal may differ slightly in what kind of access is offered (abstract, full-text HTML, PDF) and in how far back full-text holdings go (generally from 1997 onward but variable). Also, while some features, like abstract and full-text access, are standard, others, like table of contents alerts and personalised registration services may or may not be available depending on the publisher.

84 Some Common Features You can:
Search across all journals on a publisher’s website Register for some personalized services Download, print or citations and/or abstract Download full-text (PDFs and/or HTML files with hyperlinks to other full-text references or websites) In a similar vein, downloading PDFs is not the only feature available from publishers’ websites. It is also possible to link to some references in the bibliography of articles in HTML format; to download, or print citations and/or abstracts (either one at a time or in batches); to search across all journals or browse all journals by subject on a publisher’s website; and to register for personalised services such as table of contents alerts, saved searches and much more.

91 Personalized Services
Registration is often required to: Receive table of contents alerts Save searches and results for later use Re-run searches and results automatically Link to your favourite journals and articles Many of the publishers’ websites require that you register with them and create your own user name and password outside of your AGORA log in to access additional services. Facilitator: If time permits you may wish to demonstrate some of these features on using the My Synergy functionality of the resource.
