1 COMPARATIVE SUPERLATIVE OLYMPICS

2 The Comparative & Superlative Olympics
One of the things that makes the Olympics special is that the best of the best compete to win the gold medal. Looking at different information, we can compare to see which country has more medals, which has faster people, which are better at swimming. Today we’re going to have a classroom Olympics, but not like you think. We are going to use comparatives and superlatives to earn points, and yes, we will compete against each other.

3 The Comparative & Superlative Olympics
First, the events; you must choose one person to compete in each of the following categories. Everyone must do three. strong arms wide arms big shoes long hair big hand fast typer hold their breath long fast writer strong legs fast loud quiet high jumper prepared flexible

4 The Comparative & Superlative Olympics
After you’ve chosen each “athlete”, I will give you $1,500 to bet with. You must bet at least $50 in each “event”, but you can bet more if you’re confident that you will win that “event”. Problem is, you don’t know who the other team has chosen. So, on a paper, write the numbers 1 – 15 for each event, and write the person who will compete, and how much you bet. To claim your prize you must make a comparative sentence. When you are finished, give it to Mr. Matt.

6 EVENT TIME!

7 EVENT #1 STRONG ARMS In an old-school arm wrestling match, let’s see who wins. Elbows much stay on the table, and the angle must be the same. You can only use one hand. GOOD LUCK!

8 EVENT #2 BIG SHOES Who has big feet?
Hold the bottoms of your feet up to your competitor. With the heel flat on the ground, see who is the winner. GOOD LUCK!

9 EVENT #3 BIG HANDS Some people are small with big hands, some are big with small hands. You can’t just guess based on their height. With your palms together, line up the top of your middle fingers. Whoever’s hand hangs the lowest is the winner. GOOD LUCK!

10 Pinch your nose so you cannot breathe in.
EVENT #4 HOLD YOUR BREATH We may not be underwater, but it is still important to hold your breath sometimes. Pinch your nose so you cannot breathe in. You get three deep breaths, and on the last one you must hold it. You can let air out, but you must keep your mouth closed. The person who inhales, loses. GOOD LUCK!

11 Sit in your chairs, back-to-back.
EVENT #5 STRONG LEGS Sit in your chairs, back-to-back. Try to push your chair against the other person’s chair. The person whose chair moves, wins. GOOD LUCK

12 EVENT #6 LOUD Mr. Matt likes to say “OY!”.
Can you say it louder than Mr. Matt? The person who can say it the loudest, wins. GOOD LUCK

13 Using a ruler, the person who jumps the highest, wins.
EVENT #7 HIGH JUMPER Many boys in grade 5 like to play basketball. But to be good at basketball you have to be able to jump high. With your feet flat on the ground, jump with two feet straight up in the air. Using a ruler, the person who jumps the highest, wins. GOOD LUCK

14 If you can get your whole hand flat on the ground, you win.
EVENT #8 FLEXIBLE Standing straight up, with your feet flat on the ground and your legs straight, try to touch the ground. The more of your hand that can stay on the ground, the more you will win. If you can get your whole hand flat on the ground, you win. GOOD LUCK

15 The person whose other arm stretches the further wins.
EVENT #9 WIDE ARMS Standing back-to-back, line up your middle fingers on one side of your body (if you both need to sit in a chair, it might be easier). The person whose other arm stretches the further wins. GOOD LUCK
