1 Designing Experiments and Reading Graphs
in Earth Science...

2 PARTS OF AN EXPERIMENT:
1. VARIABlES: THE PART OF AN EXPERIMENT THAT CHANGES GRAPHING: independant variable: the part of the experiment that you have control over dependant variable: the part of the experiment that responds to the independant variable changes

3 2. Constants: variables in an experiment that are kept the same in all trials
3. Control: the part of the experiment that is used for comparision

4 Graphing Data x-axis: independant variable y-axis: dependant variable

5 Types of Graphs Bar graph Line graph (most commonly used in ES)
Cyclic graph

6 Relationship between Variables:
Direct Relationship: both variables are increasing or decreasing Indirect Relationship: one variable increases and the other decreases Constant: stays at same value for a variable

7 Patterns on a graph: Linear: direct or indirect relationship
Cyclic: repeats in a predictable manner

8 What Type of Relationship is Shown?
