1 List 3 things you already know about the male reproductive system.
Objective: Understand the major structures of the male reproductive system and explain the functions New Words: Penis, urethra, seminal vesicle, prostate gland, testes, epididymus Do Now: List 3 things you already know about the male reproductive system.

2 The male reproductive system
Objective: Understand the major structures of the male reproductive system and explain the functions New Words: Penis, urethra, seminal vesicle, prostate gland, testes, epididymus. The male reproductive system Three main functions: To produce gametes (the sperm cells) To produce hormones (testosterone) To deposit the sperm cells it produces inside the female.

3 Scrotum Divided sac of skin outside the abdomen
Objective: Understand the major structures of the male reproductive system and explain the functions New Words: Testes, scrotum, sperm Scrotum Divided sac of skin outside the abdomen Maintains testes at 3°C lower than normal body temperature to protect sperm viability

4 Testes Function as sperm-forming factories
Objective: Understand the major structures of the male reproductive system and explain the functions New Words: testes, testosterone Testes Function as sperm-forming factories It produces hormones such as testosterone

5 Hormones Testosterone is the hormone that
Objective: Understand the major structures of the male reproductive system and explain the functions New Words: Testosterone, testes, secondary sex characteristics Hormones Testosterone is the hormone that 1. stimulates the production of sperm 2. develops secondary sex characteristics deeper voices, bigger muscles, body and facial hair

6 Epididymis Functions to mature and store sperm cells (64-72 days)
Objective: Understand the major structures of the male reproductive system and explain the functions New Words: epididymus, sperm, vas deferens Epididymis Functions to mature and store sperm cells (64-72 days) Expels sperm with the contraction of muscles in the epididymis walls to the vas deferens

7 Sperm Sperm: has head (genetic) with acrosome,
Objective: Understand the major structures of the male reproductive system and explain the functions New Words: sperm, acrosome, flagellum Sperm Sperm: has head (genetic) with acrosome, midpiece (metabolic) containing mitochondria, tail (locomotor) which is a flagellum Whole process of sperm formation takes days, ml ejaculate, million sperm/ml

8 Spermatogenesis Spermatogenesis takes 64 to 72 days
Objective: Understand the major structures of the male reproductive system and explain the functions New Words: spermatogenesis, meiosis Spermatogenesis Spermatogenesis takes 64 to 72 days

9 Seminal Vesicles Located at the base of the bladder
Objective: Understand the major structures of the male reproductive system and explain the functions New Words: seminal vesicles, fructose, semen Seminal Vesicles Located at the base of the bladder Produces a thick, yellowish secretion (60% of semen) that contains: Fructose (sugar) Vitamin C Substances that nourish and activate sperm

10 Prostate Gland Encircles the upper part of the urethra
Objective: Understand the major structures of the male reproductive system and explain the functions Key words: prostate gland, urethra ,epididymus, sperm J Prostate Gland Encircles the upper part of the urethra Secretes a milky fluid Helps to activate sperm Enters the urethra through several small ducts

11 Semen Mixture of sperm and accessory gland secretions
Objective: Understand the major structures of the male reproductive system and explain the functions Key words: sperm, semen, fructose, acid pH, basic pH, alkalinity Semen Mixture of sperm and accessory gland secretions Advantages of accessory gland secretions Fructose provides energy for sperm cells Alkalinity of semen helps neutralize the acidic environment of vagina Elements of semen enhance sperm motility

12 Objective: Understand the major structures of the male reproductive system and explain the functions
Key words: urethra, urinary bladder, seminal vesicle, prostate gland Urethra Extends from the base of the urinary bladder to the tip of the penis Carries both urine and sperm Sperm enters from the ejaculatory duct

13 Scrotum Vas deferens Scrotum Penis, Testis, Epididymis, Urethra,
Objective: Understand the major structures of the male reproductive system and explain the functions New Words: urinary bladder, seminal vesicle, urethra, vas deferens, prostate gland Scrotum Vas deferens Scrotum Penis, Testis, Epididymis, Urethra, Seminal vesicle, Prostate gland, Urinary bladder Urinary bladder Seminal Vesicle Urethra Prostate Gland Penis Vas Deferens Epididymus Scrotum Testis
