16 Rise of Athens After defeating the Persians, Greeks wanted protection from possible future attacks Some (not all) poleis created a naval alliance, with the polis Delos as the leader = Delian League Soon, Athens took over leadership of the league, and offered to supply all the ships in exchange for money from the other poleis With all the ships, wealth, and power, the league became in reality an Athenian Empire Other poleis including Sparta opposed what Athens was doing, and soon the Peloponnesian War began! However, during this time ( BCE) Athens reached the height of her cultural achievement
