5 War for Independence 4 days later, Santa Anna siege on the Alamo mission 187 Texans crushed by Santa Anna's 5,000 man force - deaths of commander William Travis, Jim Bowie, and Davy Crockett angered Americans - Am rallying call–"Remember the Alamo!" commander Sam Houston, defeated Santa Anna's forces May 14, 1836, Santa Anna recognized Texan independence Texans wanted to be annexed by US (made a state) - Andrew Jackson refused (issue of slavery)

6 Texas Resurfaces Dec 29, 1845: granted statehood Mexico outraged  no chance at reacquiring US/Mex. boundary dispute - Mexico claimed southern border Nueces R., (Texan boundary while under Mex rule) - US claimed border was Rio Grande River
