The history of happiness
Buhle Wonder Mbambo

Buhle Wonder Mbambo is a Durban-based visual artist from Kwa-Ngcolosi
Buhle Wonder Mbambo is a Durban-based visual artist from Kwa-Ngcolosi. He began experimenting with art at the age of nine and received his first formal training through the BAT Centre Artists in Residency  (AIR)  Programme, then studied fine art through the Velobala apprenticeship programme at Durban University of Technology, under the mentorship of Themba Shibase.

“My work can be seen as a window to look at the past and future, within the South African landscape.  I’m interested in the narrative which unpacks taboos – those vestiges of social cohesion in our communities that were moulded politically and socially, in the past. These are often overlooked, yet continue to shape our contemporary society today.” Wonder Buhle

A Phone Call Away Wonder works with charcoal, soft pastel and acrylic paint on fabriano paper and canvas to articulate his ideas.

Fluent in Silence Wonder’s ideas revolve around social realities and stories that reflect beauty within the struggle.

The History of Happiness collection has a lot to do with connection, betrayal and irreversible changes.

Wonder’s work features themes such as confidence in failure and stereotypes.

“The work gives a depth on the apocryphal of life
“The work gives a depth on the apocryphal of life. And investigates misconceptions orchestrated in the past, for political gains.  It also reflects how people have been managing to live through this, in hope for a better tomorrow.  I’m interested in finding beauty in the struggle, through my work.” Wonder Buhle

The Bread Winner

Mbambo has participated in various art workshops and exhibited in galleries nationally and in Bremen, Germany in 2016. At present he works from his private studio in Durban. The Henry George holds some of his most exciting new work.

Wonder’s work is beautifully layered with stenciled backgrounds, collage and signature charcoal mark making

Following his residency in Bremen earlier this year, Wonder has built up a serious following of international collectors – most notably in Sweden and Switzerland. Wonder is therefore sending much of his work to Europe. We are, however, very privileged to have these works at the gallery as he continues to build a strong portfolio of work. All these pieces are currently unframed, allowing the buyer to choose what works for them. We invite you to come and view the work at the gallery. Prices available on request.
