Teach IB History and IB Psychology. Examiner in IB Psych for HL Paper 3. You are my 4th cohort at Brent but only the 2nd on the new curriculum.

3 INDEPENDENT RESEARCH & SCHOLARLY WRITING
*emphasis the skills they are developing and how important these are for university. Those who put the time into doing this well benefit by learning how this process actually develops. Cramming at then end doesn’t get it done.

4 What is an Extended Essay (EE)?
4,000 words max 40 hours of work Mandatory for Diploma IB regulations 3-5 hours Reads and comments on only ONE draft Student Teacher

5 How is the EE assessed?

6 How is the EE assessed?

7 Criteria Points – New for May 2018 Exams!

8 Criterion E: Engagement & RPPF
Counts for 6 of the 34 potential criteria points (almost 18%). Score for Criterion E comes from the Reflections on Planning and Progress Form (RPPF), not your Extended Essay. Reflections on Planning and Progress Form is Completed after Each Interview: Initial Interview (March of Year 1) Interim Reflection (August in Year 2) Viva Voce (December after Final Paper is done) Form will be submitted along with the essay, examiners will read it at the end. Reflections should complement the essay and give insight into how the candidate ended up where they did.

9 RPPF on Managebac

10 Reflection in the Core Extended Essay - The emphasis in the EE is on process reflection, characterised by reflecting on conceptual understanding, decision-making, time management, methodology, successes and challenges, and appropriate sources. Theory of Knowledge - The emphasis in TOK is on critical reflection, characterised by reflecting on metacognitive, evaluation, justification, arguments, claims, underlying assumptions and different perspectives. 16 What Your EE Supervisor Does and Doesn’t Do for You
The Student should… Guides you in formulating a suitable topic Assigns you the topic *Conduct initial reading or research first to identify possible areas of interest and topics worth investigating. Advises you with how to push through with your investigation Does the research, chooses and provides you the resources *Be patient. Research may take time. Remember, the EE should be evidence of around 40 hours of work!  *Start early, plan and follow your timeline Guides you on proper writing practices Writes or edits the report for you *When in doubt, ask how to properly cite sources. Helps you in planning your timeline Reminds you about the deadlines *It is the student’s responsibility to be aware of and to adhere to the deadlines Spends 3-5 hours with you Gives up every break time, lunch, after school, weekends and vacation *Follow the deadlines *Schedule an appointment and be prepared for your meetings to make the time productive for both you and your supervisor. Comments and advises on the first draft Edits the draft *Set a meeting with your supervisor to consult with them.

17 Three Important Reminders
You are choosing to pursue the IB Diploma, this is not a requirement. Be proactive in following up submitted work and meeting your deadlines. Communication is key.

18 Helping our IB Diploma Candidates

19 I want to support my child with his/her EE. What can I do as a parent?
Be aware (and understand) the IB calendar Provide a venue and time for your child to work on their EE Follow-up how they are doing with their EE Researching or writing portions of the paper Editing, proofreading the paper Allowing someone else (e.g., tutor) to work on the paper The EE should be your child’s authentic piece of work that he/she feels proud about.

20 Academic Honesty One of three areas of focus for IB.
We use as a means to identify overlap within their system, this does not prove authenticity. Supervisors validate the final draft sent to IB – the only way they can accurately do this is by being involved throughout the process = monthly meetings. Other two areas of focus? – implementing reflective elements? Going digital?

21 Thank you very much! If you have any questions or would like a copy of this presentation, please feel free to me at For students, this presentation will be made available via Manageabc.
