1 Student Organization Development Series
How to Complete a Strong Hawkeye Award Nomination Kristi Finger, M.A. Student Organization Development

2 What is a Hawkeye Award? The Hawkeye Leadership & Service Awards Celebration is the annual campus-wide event where we recognize the accomplishments of student organizations, student organization leaders, student organization advisors, and campus partners.

3 Who Can Apply? There are 14 different categories for which we seek applications or nominations. You can nominate yourself or someone else for an award honoring an individual You can nominate your own student organization or another student organization who fulfills a category’s requirements.

4 WheN Can Nominations be Submitted?
NOW! Don’t wait months to nominate a program or event that happened in August or September – do it now while details are fresh(er)! Don’t wait until the deadline is looming!!

5 What is Needed to Apply? Go to the Hawkeye Leadership & Service Awards website See all award categories & criteria for each See what is required to complete a nomination/application

6 Helpful tip… Visit the Hawkeye Awards website now!
See which categories your organization may qualify for! Know and understand what is required so you can collect the information and documentation (especially helpful if your event, etc. hasn’t happened yet!)

7 Helpful tip… You can only have one application/nomination open or in-process at a time. You can not start one, save it for later, then start a different one. OrgSync won’t let you do this. 

8 HELPFUL TIP Make sure the nomination/application speaks to all of the listed criteria ANSWER ALL THE QUESTIONS!! BUT… Don’t “B.S.” or make-up answers that not true just to be sure you have an answer for everything!  I will check every application to verify

9 MORe Helpful Tips Every Award Category requires a Letter of Support
Someone other than the Nominator!! Ask for the Letter of Support at least 2 weeks before your submission deadline! Every Award nomination should include 5 photos! Used in the Pre-program Slide Show and when revealing the winners during the Program

10 Helpful tips – Letter of Support
Have an in-person conversation with the person(s) you want to ask to provide the letter of support Show them the award criteria Their letter will need to be able to speak to how the nominee fulfills the criteria Ask for the letter to be sent to you in advance of the application deadline Give yourself time to follow-up with them if necessary Send the person a sincere “Thank you” note after receiving their letter

11 HELPFUL tip - Photos Action or Event specific photos are preferred for Organization nominations When nominating an Individual – provide photos of them at an event or when they are executing their role for the organization. You can “re-create” a photo if necessary!! Anything is better than nothing, but a high quality photo is best! What will it look like blown-up on a large screen???

12 Who Selects the winners?
Selection Committee made up : Faculty Staff Students – Graduate, Professional and Undergraduate Judging Teams do not review any applications where they may be a conflict of interest

13 What are the Judges Looking For?
Nominations/applications that fully answer all the questions! Strong letter of support! They can only evaluate on the information that is presented within the nomination/application and letter of support They do not evaluate based on personal knowledge of the nominee (if applicable)

14 Your Turn… You Be the judge!

15 TIMEline Nominations/Applications are available now
You can submit a completed nomination/application anytime before the deadline All nominations are submitted electronically via OrgSync Deadline: 12 PM/Noon on Monday, March 27, 2017 You can submit more than one application/nomination within a single category
