3. The Biblical kingdom of Israel had been taken over by one empire after another.
In the end, the descendants of the Israelites moved into Europe, and settled there, very few lived in the Holy Land – the Middle East.

4. WWI and the Balfour Agreement
During WWI, the Ottoman Empire was defeated. With their defeat, the British government took control of the Middle East (Levant – fancy language). Zionism: the idea that one day the Jewish people would be able to live in the Holy Land, the land that God promised to the Jews. The Balfour agreement announced that England would try to establish a Jewish State in Palestine, a region in the Holy Land. However, though some Jews did move, most did not and the Jewish State did not form.

6. Exodus - leaving
After WWII, many Jews from across Europe, who had lost everything during the war, made the trip back to the Holy Land, still under British control, but with the local inhabitants (Muslims – called Palestinians – though not a country) did not want them.

7. War in the Holy Land
As more and more Jews moved to the Holy Land, the local Muslim population threatened war with the British if they did not prevent the Jews from moving. The British wanted to maintain peace, but both sides wanted the Holy Land, and both sides were prepared to fight for it.

8. Jewish State
In 1947, the United Nations voted to recognize Israel as a country, for the Jews. The countries that did not recognize their independence, happened to be every country surrounding them, all Muslim, including other Muslim countries around the world. Finally on May 14, 1948, the nation of Israel became a country.

12. U.S. Involvement
Throughout its history, the U.S. has always supported the state of Israel. Weapons, money, training, food and a lot more!!! We have suffered – Other countries in the Middle East don’t like us supporting Israel / Oil prices have been high / Terrorism strikes Israel, strikes us. We’ve even been against Israel a couple times. Ronald Reagan saved the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) from destruction by Israel. President Barack Obama allowed the United Nations (U.N.) to denounce Israel from spreading its territory.

14. Israel Today
Today Israel is constantly under threat of terrorist attacks and unrest from the local Palestinian (Muslim) population.
Hundreds, even thousands (if terrorists are having a good year) of missiles are launched into Israel every year.
Its hard to fight, when the enemy is hidden amongst the civilian population.

Israel has something called conscription, which means that everyone has to serve in the military – even women in combat roles. Men: 2 years and 8 months. Women: 2 years. Guess what, even foreigners can serve!!!

17. What should the U.S. do?
Israel is one of those countries that we’ve helped out, but have really never sent troops to defend. Yet, we do spend a lot of money, and there are groups of people that don’t like us for supporting Israel.
