1 Welcome To Algebra Concept week 4
Mrs.Fardous Mrs. Beydoun

2 Objectives: Day 1 Monday September 25, 2017
I can recall basic information about fraction through note taking and group activity. SLOT: Translate the below equations: 1- The sum of 8 and a number is 5 2- Twice the quotient of a number and 6

3 Partner activity for practice Assign Homework
Fraction Review Foldable notes-part 2 (adding and subtracting). Whole group practice on the white boards Partner activity for practice Assign Homework

4 Vocabulary Equivalent fractions are fractions that name the same amount. 2 4 = 8 4

5 Creating Equivalent Fractions
1) MULTPLY the numerator and denominator by the same number. 2) DIVIDE the numerator and denominator by the same number. “Reduced Fraction” 6 x 2 3 We can choose any number to multiply by. Let’s multiply by 2. = 5 10 x 2 So, 3/5 is equivalent to 6/10.

6 YOUR TURN

7 If you have larger numbers, you can make equivalent fractions using division. Divide by a common factor. 4 28 ÷ 7 In this example, we can divide both numbers by 7. = ÷ 7 5 35 28/35 is equivalent to 4/5. Reduced Fraction

8 Fractions in Simplest Form
Fractions are in simplest form when the numerator and denominator do not have any common factors besides 1. Examples of fractions that are in simplest form: 4 2 3 8 5 11

9 Example: 5 20 28 ÷ 4 = Simplest Form This is a reduced fraction 7 ÷ 4 20 28 20: 1, 2, 4, 5, 10, 20 28: 1, 2, 4, 7, 14, 28 1 x 20 2 x 10 4 x 5 1 x 28 2 x 14 4 x 7 Common Factors: 1, 2, 4 GCF: 4 We will divide by 4.

15 Review

16 Like Fractions same denominator .

17 Unlike Fractions have different denominators. When add or subtract we have to find common denominators 2 3 3 4 5 6 5 8

18 Adding Like Fractions 1 6 5 6 4 6 The answer is: 5 6

19 Changing Unlike to Like
Steps: Find a common multiple that will go into both denominators. Multiply the numerator and denominator by the same number so the denominator is the same as the common multiple. WHAT EVER YOU DO TO THE BOTTOM YOU HAVE TO DO TO THE TOP! 4 2 3 Now you’re ready to use these fractions for addition and subtraction! 2 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18 2 6 6 5 6 5 1 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36

20 Unlike Improper Fractions
5/2 15/6 4/3 8/6 7/6 1/6 1 or

21 Exercise #2 Add fractions, put them in simplest form
1/2 + 1/3 = 1/3 + 1/5 = 5/6 + 1/3 = 1/8 + 3/4 = 3/3 + 5/6 = 3/4 + 3/20 = 6/7 + 3/4 = 1/9 + 2/3 = 3/6 + 2/9 = 1/6 + 5/12 = 5/6 9/10 8/15 1 17/28 1 1/6 7/9 7/8 13/18 1 5/6 7/12

22 Objectives: Day 4 Friday September 29, 2017
