3 Helium Atom Model There are two There are two NEUTRONS PROTONS.
These are two VALENCE ELECTRONS in the OUTER MOST energy level.

6 Group I is known as the... Alkali Metals
This group of elements has only one valance electron in their outer shell. Alkali metals can explode if they are exposed to water. Alkali metals have low melting points. Alkali Metals bond chemically with Group 17 to form salts. All members in this group are low density, soft metals. End

7 Group 2 is known as the... Alkaline Earth Metals.
Elements in Group 2 have 2 Valence Electrons. This makes them very reactive. Are not found in nature because of their reactivity. End

8 This is Group 3-12 and are known as...
Transition Metals. This group conducts both heat and electricity. Their valence electrons are present in more than just one shell. Three of the elements in this group are known to produce a magnetic field: iron---cobalt---nickel End

9 Groups 13, 14, and 15 are called... Other Metals.
Their valence electrons are present only in their outer shell. All elements in this group are solids. Every element in this group have a high density. End

10 Group 18 is known as... Noble Gases. This group cannot form compounds.
Every element in this group has the maximum number of electrons possible in their outer shell. Because of the number of electrons in their outer shell, this group is stable. End

11 Group 17 is known as... Halogens.
The term “Halogen” means “salt former” and compounds containing halogen are known as salts. All halogens have 7 electrons in their outer shells, giving them an oxidation number -1. All halogens exist in all three states of matter when at room temperature. End

12 Groups 14, 15, and 16 are known as... Non-Metals.
Non metals do not conduct electricity or heat very well. The elements are very brittle. These elements do not reflect light. Appear dull Make up 97% of our body. End

13 This Group is known as... Rare Earth Metals.
The Rare Earth Metals are made up of lanthanide and actinide. A great majority of these elements are synthetic, or man made. All Rare Earth Metals are found in Group 3 of the Periodic End

14 This Group is called... Metalloids. Metalloids are found along
the "stair step" line that distinguishes metals from non-metals.
