20,000 years ago- 1st people arrive in land that would be U.S. (Asia- native americans)
1500’s- Spanish- FL, TX, CA
1600’s- French, Dutch, English began to arrive
French: Canada, along Mississippi R, Louisiana
Dutch: New Amsterdam (NY)
English: E. Coast, Jamestown (1607)
Late 1600’s – 1700’s: German, Swedish, Irish, and Scottish

Early 1600’s – 1807: Over 500,000 Africans brought by force (Western & central Africa- “Middle Passage”
1830’s-1860’s- Over 5 million people came to the U.S. (Ireland, Germany, gold rush)
Another 10 million more (Denmark, Norway, Sweden)
: Around 22 million from Southern & Eastern Europe (Greece, Italy, Poland, Russia)

: U.S. pop. Climbed from 12 million to around 120 million
Mid 1800’s: Urbanization movement (factories)
“Great Migration”- newly freed African Amer’s. moved northward
By over ½ of U.S. pop. Lived in cities (Blue collar v. white collar)
