4 Instructions As we answer questions about the text, please try to be specific in your answers. Go back to the text and find words and phrases that help you answer the question. Everyone’s eyes should be on the text when a question is asked. There is no need to raise hands, because everyone will be called on at some point. Please discuss the answers with your group. If someone answers a question and you have additional thoughts, please tell us. Make sure as we go along that you are marking up the text. This will make it easier to do the assignment when you go back to the information. You will notice line numbers. These will help us focus our analysis. Many questions require evidence from multiple areas.

6 Text Dependent Questions
What are non-examples of war? What participants allow for the legal definition of war and what trait do they all share? What reasons do people go to war? Using lines cite specific evidence explaining how and why just war theory has impacted societies over time. What responsibilities do heads of state have in war?

7 Text Dependent Questions
How does political sovereignty allow nations to wage war against others without going through the six steps of just war theory? What is a preemptive strike and what are the arguments for and against it? What words or phrases contradict the concept of ulterior motives in just war theory? What results must be taken into account prior to waging war?

8 Assessment Precise Précis
Sentence 1: Provide the name of the author, the type of text (genre/primary or secondary), the date, and the title of the text followed by a marker verb that introduces the claim (argument). Sentence 2: Using a new marker verb, explain the best support the author provides for the claim. Include at least three details from the text in your explanation. Sentence 3: Using a new marker verb and a transition (e.g. additionally, to further demonstrate, to illustrate further, etc.) explain the next best support the author provides for the claim/main idea with at least three details from the text.

9 Assessment Read the two sources on the war in Afghanistan.
With your group discuss and annotate the text on Iraq and identify three reasons that answers the following: Was the war in Iraq just or unjust? Use the criteria in the close read to form your response. Be prepared to share out with the class and defend your answer!

10 Cross school Assignment
Your assessment grade will be to make a post on Edmodo that answers the same question you discussed with your group: Was the war in Iraq just or unjust? Additionally, you will need to comment on another students post from a school that is not ours. Simply do you agree or disagree with their post and why? To recap, make your own post answering the question AND comment on another students post from the other school using evidence from the two texts.
