3 How to read a textbook 101 Why are you having to read anyway? Most students report being overwhelmed with the volume and the difficulty of their textbook reading assignments Some get behind and get overwhelmed Some read but do not retain what they read

4 sq3r Advantages Identify the most important points quickly
Distinguish between the main ideas and details Comprehend the information quickly Situate information into memory Review for exams efficiently

5 sq35 S=survey the text Title, author, date of publication
Preface, introduction, table of contents – how is it organized Chapter highlights, summaries, study questions, appendices

6 sq3r S=survey the assignment Why are you reading this material
How interested are you in this material What is your concentration span What is your comfortable reading level – is there a match Schedule your reading time and place – Chunking Survey the assigned chapter(s)

7 SQ3R Q=question What information do you hope to gain from reading the material? Objectives What do you already know about this topic? Turn the main points into questions. Use these questions to guide your reading

8 sq3r 1st R=read Read the section you have surveyed using your questions as a guide Use sticky notes Look up words you do not know ( dictionary)

9 sq3r 2nd R=recite Restate the main points and supporting details in your own words Mark your text – main points, definitions, examples Use numbers to indicate important series of information Take notes in the margins

10 sq3r 3rd r=review At the end of you study session, review the materials you have read using your notes, highlighted areas, sticky notes and etc. Several study periods separated by time works best

Skip the questions that you find extremely difficult Pay attention to the time as you take the rest of the test On screen clock Read all of the possible answers before selecting one Check your answers Scores – no one is expected to be able to answer all of the questions Use your energy to take the test not to get frustrated
