Focus students: Begin with an attention-getting opening statement. State objective: Describe what is to be learned and what the student will do to demonstrate that he/she has acquired the learning. Establish purpose: WHY and HOW this lesson relates to the students’ needs. Establish transfer: Prepare students for the instruction section of the lesson. Lead them into the lesson. Lead them into the lesson with a transition statement

4 Direct instruction “I Do.”

5 Direct instruction Check for understanding Pose key questions
Ask students to explain concept, definitions, attributes in their own words Have students discriminate between examples and non-examples Encourage students to generate their own examples Use active participation devices What are students doing to stay engaged? Check for Understanding: The teacher checks for understanding of the concepts taught. If there is doubt that students understand, the lesson should be re-taught before practice begins. Engagement activities: think-pair-share, summarize information delivered, take notes, class discussion, graphic organizer, etc.

6 Guided practice “We do.”
Initiate practice activities under teacher supervision Elicit overt response that demonstrates objective Check for understanding Provide specific results The students practice new learning under the supervision of the teacher. Individual remediation is provided as needed. The teacher brings the lesson presentation to a conclusion. Closure activities include: reinforcing of major points learned, clarifying of key points and relating concepts of the lesson to concepts previously learned.

7 Independent practice “you Do.”
Have students continue to practice on their own Provide knowledge of results Homework v. classwork Once the students have mastered the content and skill, independent practice is assigned through homework or individual work in class. This work should include enough different contexts so that the skill may be applied to any relevant situation. Only send students home with independent practice if you are sure that everyone can be successful completing the activity on their own.

8 closure Informal assessment to determine next teaching step
Ask for questions or concerns Ask students to reiterate key points Once the students have mastered the content and skill, independent practice is assigned through homework or individual work in class. This work should include enough different contexts so that the skill may be applied to any relevant situation. Only send students home with independent practice if you are sure that everyone can be successful completing the activity on their own.
