3 Typical Activities in RISE
Joint research and innovation project Implemented by secondment of staff around the consortium (1 month to 12 months duration) Networking/training events “Staff” = research students, postdocs, PIs, technical and managerial staff Two types of participant Beneficiary: organisation in Europe Partner: organisation outside of Europe (Third Country)

New programme: Commission expects 6 to 10 Beneficiaries to be the norm Max of 540 researcher-months for the secondments (some rules associated with secondment) Who can receive the funding? Member States and Associated Counties automatically receive funding Non-European (Third)Countries: High-Income Counties (now includes BRICs) don’t automatically get funding – can participate, but pay their own way A list of Third countries who automatically get funding is in Annex A to the Horizon 2020 Work Programme.

Excellence (50%) Impact (30%) Implementation (20%) Quality, innovative aspects and credibility of the research (including inter/multidisciplinary aspects) Enhancing research- and innovation-related human resources, skills and working conditions to realise the potential of individuals and to provide new career perspectives Overall coherence and effectiveness of the work plan, including appropriateness of the allocation of tasks and resources Clarity and quality of knowledge sharing among the participants in light of the research and innovation objectives. To develop new and lasting research collaborations, to achieve transfer of knowledge between research institutions and to improve research and innovation potential at the European and global levels Appropriateness of the management structures and procedures, including quality management and risk management Quality of the interaction between the participating organisations Effectiveness of the proposed measures for communication and results dissemination Appropriateness of the institutional environment (infrastructure) Competences, experience and complementarity of the participating organisations and institutional commitment

7 Now Decide which RISE you will target: International, Inter-sectoral or a combination Start forming your consortium, or seek to join one “under formation” Apply to Enterprise Ireland for travel funding to meet partners Look at the websites of previously-funded projects (find them on CORDIS Projects) Decide on a writing strategy (e.g. lead writing partner, split the sections amongst the partners, how to receive input from others) If coordinating, apply to EI for Coordinator Support Funding. Will you work with a consultant? Let your research office know that you are applying Start planning your research & training programme (work packages etc.)
