1 Virtualization Engine Console Usability Enhancements
Mike Murphy Virtualization Engine console development

2 Agenda Topics to be covered are:
Virtualization Engine console Welcome page Readiness status/links Resource links Health Center Setup Wizard

3 Learning Objectives At the conclusion of this material, you should be able to: Locate the Virtualization Engine Welcome page Describe the purpose of the Welcome page Identify what links are available from the Welcome page Locate the Health Center Setup Wizard Describe the purpose of the wizard Use the wizard to add management sources, groups, and monitors to the health center

4 Virtualization Engine Welcome Page
Launch via navigation tree Welcome item Can be launched via the Welcome item under the Virtualization Engine Console tree node

5 Virtualization Engine Welcome Page
Enhances Virtualization Engine console usability Provides one place to go to determine at a glance if functions in the Virtualization Engine console are ready to use Provides links to perform additional configuration/setup if needed Provides links to other functions when detected, such as, IBM Director setup and Virtualization Engine software updates Provides info center links regarding EWLM setup if EWLM is detected Provides an info center link regarding how to navigate and use the Virtualization Engine console

6 Virtualization Engine Welcome Page
Page divided into 2 sections Readiness: items that have a status Resources: items that have no status Welcome page is divided into 2 sections: VE Readiness - contains items that have an associated state indicating whether that item is ready to use or needs further configuration VE Resources - contains items that do not have an associated state, i.e., links to other portlets or info center articles Can refresh Readiness items to check for status change by clicking Refresh button

7 Virtualization Engine Welcome Page - Readiness
Readiness functions listed: Single signon (always displayed) – launches the Single Signon Management portlet Health center (always displayed) - launches the Health Center Setup Wizard Resource discovery services (displayed only if RDS is installed in this VE Environment) – launches the Resource Dependency Service Configuration portlet Status icons: Red – some configuration action is required to enable the use of the function Yellow – some configuration has been completed, however more may be needed. Some function may be useable. Green – all configuration has been completed, the function is useable. Clicking the link associated with a red or yellow status launches the appropriate application you can use to resolve the condition. Status icons Red: action is required Yellow: some configuration is done, more may be needed Green: all configuration is done, ready to use Click link to resolve red or yellow condition Refresh capability

8 Virtualization Engine Welcome Page - Readiness
Set up your user identity associations Set up single signon for your users link launches the Single Signon page which allows you to set up your user identity associations See the Single Signon presentation for details

9 Virtualization Engine Welcome Page - Readiness
Add mgmt sources, groups, and monitors to the health center Set up the health center link launches the Health Center Setup Wizard page which helps you add management sources, groups, and monitors to the health center. Details are covered later in this presentation.

10 Virtualization Engine Welcome Page - Readiness
Configure Resource Dependency data collectors Configure Resource Dependency Service link launches the Resource Dependency Service Configuration page which, provided you have the proper authority, allows you to: manage your resource dependency data collector configurations view ODI-RM discovered resources work with custom data collectors configure Intelligent Device discovery campaigns used to probe your network discovering resources manage WebSphere Application Server See the Resource Dependency Service presentation for details.

11 Virtualization Engine Welcome Page - Resources
Welcome page resources links Set up IBM Director - launches the Set Up IBM Director page which is covered later (displayed only when one or more IBM Director bridges is detected in your VE Environment) Configure EWLM domain manager - launches an info center link (displayed only when EWLM software is detected in your VE Environment) Install EWLM managed servers - launches an info center link (displayed only when EWLM software is detected in your VE Environment) Configure EWLM managed servers - launches an info center link (displayed only when EWLM software is detected in your VE Environment) Ensure that you install the latest Virtualization Engine updates – launches the Virtualization Engine Updates page (displayed only if you are a VEAdministrator) Get to know the Virtualization Engine console – launches an info center article (always displayed) All links except Get to know the Virtualization Engine console are conditionally displayed

12 Set Up IBM Director Steps you through setup process
Installs Director Console if not already installed Uses LIC support Set up IBM Director link launches the Set Up IBM Director page which leads you through the steps to setup IBM Director Director Console is installed if not already installed (uses Java Web Start) Links into IBM Director function uses launch in context functionality

13 Virtualization Engine Updates
Allows you to find, download, and install updates for your Virtualization Engine products Ensure that you install the latest Virtualization Engine updates link launches the Virtualization Engine Updates page which allows you to find, download, and install updates for your Virtualization Engine products. The Virtualization Engine Updates component contacts IBM to check for available updates for your installed Virtualization Engine products, and then gives you the ability to download and install them. From one Virtualization Engine Console system you can download and install updates on your remote Virtualization Engine systems also. You can also download IBM Director agent and eWLM agent updates and import them into IBM Director for distribution. See the Virtualization Engine Updates presentation for details.

14 Health Center Setup Wizard
Launch via navigation tree Health Center Setup item Can be launched via the Welcome item under the Virtualization Engine Console tree node

15 Health Center Setup Wizard
Also launch from Management Source Configuration page Can also be launched via the Set up the health center link on the Management Source Configuration page

16 Health Center Setup Wizard
Enhances Virtualization Engine console usability Wizard format steps user through health center setup Discovers management sources that have not already been added Allows you to choose which management sources to add Allows you to rename management sources Optionally adds your groups and monitors Summarizes your choices

17 Health Center Setup Wizard - Welcome
Explains what wizard does for you The Welcome page describes the purpose of the setup wizard and how to use it.

18 Health Center Setup Wizard – Management Sources
Discovers mgmt sources that haven’t already been added Allows rename Link to view current mgmt sources Discovers management sources that have not already been added for the current user and lists those in a table Management source name is generated based on host name and management source type (e.g., MC, DSM, DIR) Can rename by selecting one or more sources in the table and clicking Rename button Must select one or more to add before continuing Can view your current list of management sources by clicking View currently configured management sources link

19 Health Center Setup Wizard – Rename
This is the name the management source is known as in the health center Cannot be renamed after it is added by wizard Allows you to rename the selected management source Once you’ve changed the name and finished the wizard, the name cannot be changed again.

20 Health Center Setup Wizard - Resources
Select whether you want your groups and/or monitors added Allows you to choose whether you want your groups and/or monitors added to the health center automatically Saves you time – using health center you would need to select each group or monitor individually Note: if an active connection cannot be obtained to the management source containing the groups or monitors, it will not be added.

21 Health Center Setup Wizard - Summary
Summarizes your selections Provides choice to open health center when finished Summarizes the choices you’ve made on the previous pages Provides option to open health center when wizard completes You can go back to change selections (either by clicking Back or selecting the specific page name listed on the left)

22 Conclusion / Wrap-up The Welcome page is your first stop for determining whether the Virtualization Engine console is ready to use The Welcome page also provides links to key functions and information The health center setup wizard simplifies the process of adding management sources, groups, and monitors to the health center

Performance is in Internal Throughput Rate (ITR) ratio based on measurements and projections using standard IBM benchmarks in a controlled environment. The actual throughput that any user will experience will vary depending upon considerations such as the amount of multiprogramming in the user’s job stream, the I/O configuration, the storage configuration, and the workload processed. Therefore, no assurance can be given that an individual user will achieve throughput improvements equivalent to the performance ratios
