He closed the port of New Orleans to the British so they could not control the Mississippi River.
Throughout the war he provided money, weapons and ammunition to the Continental Army.

French officer who helped to train George Washington’s Continental Army

16. James Armistead
Was an African American who served as a spy under George Washington and Lafayette.
He provided valuable information about Cornwallis at Yorktown that allowed the Americans to defeat the trapped British Army.

17. John Paul Jones Captain of an American vessel in the Navy.
Became an American hero when he defeated and captured the much larger British warship the Serapis.
Even though his ship was damaged, he refused to surrender.

Lawyer who defended the British soldiers who fired upon the crowed a the Boston Massacre.

Wrote letters supporting women’s rights.
