3 Pg.115 The City-State …could be a town, city or even a village.
Was known as the polis  place for people to have political, social and religious activities. Acropolis was the meeting place of the polis. - Normally on top of a hill. The agora was the open-air market and meeting place of a Greek Polis. - Usually below the acropolis. Pg.115

6 Slaves and Resident Aliens
The Establishment City-states varied greatly in size and population. Polis consisted of three types of persons: City-states distrusted one another and were very independent. Adult Males Citizens with political rights Women and Children Citizens with no political rights Slaves and Resident Aliens Noncitizens Slavery was not based on race in ancient Greece. Slaves were prisoners of war or debt slaves who could not repay a debt.

7 The Muscle The polis had a heavily armed infantry known as hoplites..
- Each had a round shield, a short sword, and a spear about 9 feet long.

8 The Phalanx The Eagle Hoplite battle formation.
A formation that created a wall of shields to protect the soldiers. - Troops were disciplined to hold a line which created a nearly impenetrable forest of points to the front.

As Greece became too crowded, the Greeks moved and started new colonies. -Lead to increase in trade. -Exported pottery, wine and olive oil. As trade increased, Greece shifted from a barter economy based on trade… to a money economy with coins. Geography Skills pg.117

13 Sparta Sparta was a military state  all men became soldiers.
Sparta would conquer all the city-states around it to get more land. The people they captured, called helots, were made to work for the Spartans.

19 Athens Athens went through three (3) different governments: 1. Monarchy with Kings 2. Oligarchy led by Aristocrats 3. **Council of men that made laws an Assembly of citizens would then vote on the laws. **The Council and Assembly became the basis for the world’s 1st Democracy
