1 Infer With Text Clues

2 Inference Equation Background Knowledge Text Clues Inference

3 The reader takes what he knows, then merges that with the text to…
Make A Prediction We can’t infer if there are too few clues!! Then it is just a guess!! Clue Clue

4 Make A Prediction Predictions can be confirmed or contradicted by the end of the story or text. Oh no! I was wrong!

5 Let’s Try It Out!! Make A Prediction
Read the following passage, then get with a partner to make a prediction about what will happen next, and the text clues that helped you with the prediction.

6 The Great Escape “Thanks for letting me help out in your pet shop, Uncle Bill,” Sarah said. “I won’t disappoint you.” “You can start by feeding the guinea pigs,” her uncle told her. “Just be careful and make sure you close the pen when you’re done. Those little guys love to escape.” “No problem,” Sarah said. She got the bag of guinea pig food and opened the pen. The phone rang while she was working. Uncle Bill talked for a minute, then walked up to her. “Sarah, I’ve got to run out for a few minutes,” he said. “I’ve got a hamster emergency to take care of.”

7 I’ll take good care of things while you’re gone,” Sarah promised.
Uncle Bill left, and Sarah poured the guinea pig food into the bowl in the pen. The little animals crowded around the bowl. Then Sarah heard a crash. She turned around to see that one of the plastic fish bowls had fallen over. She ran to the bowl and quickly scooped up the fish. She put the fish in another bowl and cleaned up the water. Then she went back to the guinea pig pen. What do you predict will happen next? What clue or clues were in the text?

8 You just made an inference!
Let’s see if you were right! “Oh no!” Sarah cried. She had accidentally left the pen open. The guinea pigs had escaped! How did you do? You just made an inference!

A conclusion is the decision you come to when you put these two together Draw A Conclusion

11 Let’s Try It Out!! Drawing Conclusions
Read the following passage, then get with a partner to make a prediction about what will happen next, and the text clues that helped you with the prediction.

12 The Great Gift I love birthday parties — especially my own. The part I like best about my birthday is presents. In our house, we have two traditions. One is a big party with the whole family. The other tradition is my mother’s rules. About an hour before my party, my mom calls me into the kitchen. Then, she reads the list: - Say hello to people when they come in. - Offer guests food instead of eating all the good stuff myself. - Don’t rip off the wrapping paper as if I’d never seen a present before. - Always say, “Thank you.” Pretend that I like a present, even if it’s the ugliest thing I’ve ever seen. On most birthdays, following the rules has been easy. For the last five years, I’ve pretended to love the socks that Aunt Laura has given me. I am ready. Everything is going well this year as I get to the last—and biggest—box in thepile. It is almost as big as I am.

13 Why does the author say that it is the best
I try hard not to rip the paper. As I remove the paper, I say something like, “I can’t wait to see what it is.” It’s from my great grandfather. He’s smiling a big smile. The paper falls to the floor. I don’t know what to say. Here, in the middle of the room, stands a rocking horse. It’s the kind a little kid rides. I look at Great Gramps. “It took me six years to make it. Do you like it, Henry?” he says. My mother looks at me as if she’s afraid of something. But I get on the horse.(It wasn’t like my friends were there to watch.) I rock it, and tell Gramps it’s the best rocking horse I’ve ever had. And it is! Was the answer right there? Why does the author say that it is the best rocking horse?

14 What have you learned so far about inferencing with text clues?
Use Background Knowledge and Text Clues to make an inference When you put those two together, you can make a prediction. A prediction can be confirmed or changed. When you look for text clues, you can also draw a conclusion. Sometime the author will just tell you, but most of the time you will have to think!!

15 When you infer in fiction you will think about…
One more thing…. When you infer in fiction you will think about… Setting Theme plot Characters Problem Solution

16 So now, let’s practice by reading some scenarios and THINKING!!
We infer that you are going to be great at this!! .

17 Get a piece of paper and number 1-5
Get a piece of paper and number 1-5. I am going to show you some scenarios and you will write down an inference. Here we go!

18 1. Bill was reading about the sun, the moon, and Mars
1. Bill was reading about the sun, the moon, and Mars. It was a book about…… Make an inference

19 It was a book about the solar system.
Let’s see if you were right! It was a book about the solar system. How did you do?

20 2. At recess the students got their gloves, bats, and balls
2. At recess the students got their gloves, bats, and balls. What were they likely to do? Make an inference

21 They were going to play baseball.
Let’s see if you were right! They were going to play baseball. How did you do?

22 3. During a very severe storm, the electricity went off
3. During a very severe storm, the electricity went off. Dad lit a match. What did he probably want to find? Make an inference

23 Dad probably wanted to find a flashlight or candles.
Let’s see if you were right! Dad probably wanted to find a flashlight or candles. How did you do?

24 4. Maria had a day off from school
4. Maria had a day off from school. She looked in the newspaper to find the best sales. Then she left the house. Where did she probably go? Make an inference

25 Let’s see if you were right!
Maria went shopping! How did you do?

26 5. Jesse and his father went walking on a warm spring day
5. Jesse and his father went walking on a warm spring day. There was a nice breeze in the air. What might Jesse and his father do to have fun? Rake leaves, fly a kite, or watch TV? Make an inference

27 Jess and his father will fly a kite.
Let’s see if you were right! Jess and his father will fly a kite. How did you do?
