1 Maxwell 2D Control Panel, Modeler, and Material Manager

2 The Maxwell Control Panel
Ansoft - general information Projects - to start a project Translators - to do a .dxf to 2D model translation Print - to “grab screen” and produce a bitmap file Utilities - additional tools including Plotdata

3 Print Manager Print Manager functionality depends on system
PC base - “grab screen” produces a bitmap file Unix base - supports various printers and .gif screen captures

4 The Maxwell Utilities Panel
Colors - changes default screen colors 2D modeler - to create or modify .sm2 files Plotdata - “fancy” line calculator for graphing Evaluator - to solve an equation Materials - to modify global material file

5 The Color Manager Used to modify your screen colors to a custom setting Load black.rgb for black background in 2D

6 The Plotdata Calculator

7 The Plotdata Calculator
Example: tools/calculator/Eqn.... 5.0 * sin(2*t) / Ok 5.0 * cos(2*t) / Ok preview/done

Always Select Solver Type Always Select Drawing Plane

13 Computed Field Quantities Derived Field Quantities
The Maxwell 2D Solvers Solvers Computed Field Quantities Derived Field Quantities Electric Fields Electrostatic  (DC Electric Potential) E, D AC Conduction (jt) (AC Electric Potential) E(jt), D(jt), J(jt) DC Conduction E, J DC Magnetics Magnetostatic AZ or A (DC Magnetic Potential) H, B AC Magnetics Eddy Current AZ(jt) or A(jt) (AC Magnetic Potential), (jt) (AC Electric Potential) H(jt), B(jt), J(jt) Eddy Axial AZ(jt) (AC Magnetic Field) Transient Solver Transient AZ(t) H(t), B(t), J(t) Thermal Solver Thermal T (Temperature) Grad T, Flux. Parametrics Any of the above

14 The Maxwell Drawing Planes
Geometric Model Cartesian (XY Plane) Axisymmetric (RZ Plane) X Y Z R A Cartesian (XY) model represents a cross-section of a device that extends in the z-direction. Visualize the geometric model as extending perpendicular to the plane being modeled. An axisymmetric (RZ) model represents a cross-section of a device that is revolved 360 around an axis of symmetry (the z-axis). Visualize the geometric model as being revolved around the z-axis.

15 The 2D Modeler General Suggestions:
Drawing size should be 3-5 times model size unless extreme fringing Minimize the number of vertices for arcs and circles Use unique name and color for each object Suggest mapping out coordinates in advance Create dummy objects as reference for parametrics

21 The Material Manager

22 Material Manager BH Curves
Relative permeability (incremental) satisfies: 1  r(incr.)  75,000 At least 20 points in curve well into saturation Existing curves can be imported using: Import ... For future use, you can export all custom BH curves to: c:/ansoft/config/matdb/_.bh For 2D, nonlinear materials available in Magnetostatic and Eddy Current

23 Material Manager Creating a new BH Curve
Select Material/Add to create a new nonlinear material Specify a new name under “Material Properties” and check “nonlinear” box Click on BH Curve … to enter the “BH Curve Entry” Screen Click on “Add Point” and use text entry boxes in lower left corner with TAB key to input each (H, B) point Select “enter” twice for the last point

24 Material Manager Permanent Magnet Modeling
Permanent magnets are modeled as combination surface and volume current densities Linear Magnets - equivalent current sheet on surface of magnet - magnets with uniform magnetization only have current sheet Nonlinear Magnets - equivalent current density inside magnet

25 Material Manager Linear Permanent Magnet
Select two of the following: Mu, the relative permeability, r. Hc, the magnetic coercivity, Hc. Br, the magnetic retentivity, Br. Mp, the permanent dipole magnetization, Mp. These properties are related by: where: B is the magnetic flux density. H is the magnetic field. o is the permeability of free space, 4x10e-7 webers/ampere-meter. r is the relative permeability. Hc is the magnetic coercivity. Mp is the permanent dipole magnetization. m is the magnetic susceptibility. B Br Magnetic Remanence Hc Magnetic Coercivity H Graphical representation
