1
Values And Characteristics Of David's Life (Lessons In Brokenness)
BY EVANG VICTOR AINA
2
Introduction:- Over the years, I had often wondered, why some of us behave the way we do, why can't we reflect the life of Christ who loved us and died for us.
3
We can't endure one another, intolerance, pride, self- consciousness, backbiting, vengeful, division, strife etc. You begin to wonder why a brother or sister’s life has not really conformed to that of Christ after so many years ,
4
of been born again. (Gal 5:13-26) Some can't see Gods hand in the events of their life.(Amp) Some try to save themselves, even though claimed they have surrendered to him.
5
The liberty Christ gave is to walk in the same law and not a license to sin. He knows our strength and weakness, (Psalm 103:13-14) If you act otherwise you are taking liberty.
6
The human soul is like an untamed Stallion with unbridled energy, sometimes it's majestic and powerful. Sometimes it's very stubborn, destructive and dangerous.
7
That is why the outer man has to be broken so that we can be useful to God.
1Thes 5:23.NLT Rom7:22,Eph 3:16, 2Cor 4:16. Inner and outer man=Spirit and Soul.
8
Dictionary Definition- Brokeness simply means to "reduce to submission".
Other Definitions. Shattering of my self will Striping off my self reliance and independence from God.
9
3.Softening of the soil of my heart.
4.The decrease of my self so that Christ may increase till I fade into Him. Gal 2:20 NLT.
10
Brokeness removes focus from you (2Cor 4:7)
Brokeness removes focus from you (2Cor 4:7). To be dead, as to bring out fruit unto the Lord. (John 12:24-25).
11
The outer shell is been removed which is your own life so that the seed which is the life of Christ may come out in us.
12
The first time God mentioned David in the Bible, He called him a man after God’s own heart (1 Sam 13:14), and the last word a man after God’s own heart . Act 13:22.
13
There are valuable lessons to learn from the life of David if God can say that He is after those whose heart are perfect before Him to do them good.
14
1Sam 13:1-14. Saul, after two years on the throne brought out his nature (Self seeking and coward).
David’s anointing led him to the desert not the throne.
15
God has a school of brokenness but does not have many broken men.
David’s anointing led him into the school of suffering not into a royal lineage but a school of brokenness where spears are been thrown at him.
16
Davids inner being was mutilated, his personality changed and when it was over you could barely recognize that it was the original David. Everyone starts this Christian journey, with a lot of promises, with a lot of hope,
17
then we enter into the “School of Brokenness”, and then, what do we do with our pain? What do we do with the spears thrown at us most of the time by our loved ones or even brethren in the church?
18
By an earthly standard David was a shattered man,but by heavenly standard he was a broken one, a vessel unto honour (2Tim 2:20-21). Psalm 34:18, God is close to the broken hearted.
19
Psalm 57:15 &50:10,17. Some Reflections on Brokenness. 1
Psalm 57:15 &50:10,17. Some Reflections on Brokenness. 1.Some use it to describe underlying reason to sin
20
2. Others use it to describe the result of being sinned against e. g
2.Others use it to describe the result of being sinned against e.g. emotionally wounded. 3.Some describe it as a result of enduring suffering and sentence of death.
21
Job felt shame, rejection and horrific, suffering and wounded but he did not sin,Job1:13-22,&2:9.
Biblical brokenness is when life had beaten you down, where you have no other way to turn but God as your only source of help. Ps 51:17
22
David would have been in the best position to use his past suffering as an excuse to explain his sin, against God and others but he did not.
23
4 MAIN REASONS TO HELP US UNDERSTAND BROKENNESS.
1.Our environmental influence. 2.Consequences of our sin 3.The devil 4.God and His sovereignty.
24
1.Sin Fallen enviroment,Lk 13:4 Tower of Siloam, not their sin that causes the death directly. Ezk 28:13, Rms 5:14. No sin, no death. 2.Consequences of our sin-Gal 6:7, Hosea 8:6-7, sowing and reaping. Ps 119:67,71, 75.NIV
25
3.Satan and his Angels. John 10:10,2Cor 2:11, don't be ignorant of his devices, 1Pet 4:1.
4.Our heavenly father is preparing us for His higher purpose.
26
Biblical brokenness is found in the refining process, because it has immediate purpose and eternal purpose. David and Paul testify to this. ('He will not leave my soul in hell'. Suffering of this present time, can't be compared…) ROM 8:18.
27
God's immediate purpose is to develop godly character in us.
Refine in suffering. Heb 12: , Ps 66:10, Ps 66:10- 13, Isa 45:5-7 NLT. God Orchestrates it.
28
In the case of David God was preparing him for a higher purpose
In the case of David God was preparing him for a higher purpose. And it's so for every true believer. Beginning of his journey 1 Sam 17:8-10 Goliath defy the army…) 1Sam 17:22-30, (22,25,26,30,) (42).

God took David through this process also to deal with the Saul in him.
When Absalom rebelled years later he did not attack,he thought about the people above his interest.
35
2Sam 14:25 Absalom, 2Sam 15:1- 12 vs 13-Fled.
Question: If God said we are a nation of kings and priests what type of king am I? A jealous king like Saul that felt threatened by those who are there to Help?
36
2.A servant Leader as David who will lay down his life, for the Good of his followers. Acts 13:22. 2Sam 23:13-17. 3. A schemer ,and rebellious leader like Absalom.
37
Toxic and servant leader.
Note-God is more tough when his sons erred, Uriah case. 2Sam 12:9-15.1Kgs 15:5. Gene Edwards in his book 3 kings, said we have this 3 Kings fighting for control over our lives.
