1 European Detector R&D: AIDA
4th Neutrino Factory International Design Study Meeting, Mumbai Joint with EUROnu Meeting 12 October 2009 Paul Soler

Definition of AIDA DevDet: this was a failed FP7 Integrating Activity proposal for “Detector Development Infrastructures for Particle Physics Experiments” It included detector R&D for Super-LHC, Linear Collider, future accelerator-driven neutrino facilities and B-factories The aim was to develop test beam facilities for neutrino detector R&D. This proposal was not funded in first round AIDA: Advanced Infrastructure for Detectors at Accelerators New EU approach of targetted calls is recommending that DevDet be resubmitted to the EU in their Integrating Activity call of August 2009 (submission date 3 December 2009) – renamed as AIDA I am part of the small group of people putting together the proposal and coordinating the “Neutrino” activities We need to make sure that the neutrino community is well represented in this new call to be able to fund neutrino detector R&D in Europe. 4th Neutrino Factory International Design Study Meeting Mumbai, 12 October 2009

AIDA aims AIMS AIDA: to fund common R&D projects for Super-LHC, Linear Collider, neutrino facilities and B-factories From the point of view of neutrino R&D, the proposal aims to fund a particle test beam at CERN (H8) and its associated instrumentation (ie MICE-EMR detector which has a configuration like Minerva in the Molpurgo magnet and a prototype MIND that can be used as spectrometer). The management team at the moment consists of: Laurent Serin (coordinator), Lucie Linssen, Steiner Stapnes, Mar Capeans Garrido, Tiels Behnke, Francesco Forti, Hans Taureg, Claire Shepherd-Themistocleous, Svetlomir Stavrev There are also National Representatives to coordinate individual country contributions (Ken Long is UK rep) Expect ~50 institutes represented from about countries EU budget 10 MEuro max but project likely to be ~35 MEuro 4th Neutrino Factory International Design Study Meeting Mumbai, 12 October 2009

Neutrino activity within AIDA I propose the neutrino activity be included within WP8, inside task: 8.1. Test Beams at CERN and Frascati Inside this task we would upgrade the H8 beamline: Install a TASD prototype inside the Molpurgo magnet Do the MIND prototype 2x2x4 m3 (=10-3 of MIND) This will allow to test both electron and muon charge ID in the same test Apart from the equipment, detectors and electronics we would also need to provide a DAQ. Alain Blondel will speak in more detail about these plans on the Tuesday Detector R&D session. 4th Neutrino Factory International Design Study Meeting Mumbai, 12 October 2009

Neutrino activity within AIDA Other possible neutrino interests: WP2: Software WP3: Electronics WP8: Improvement and equipment of beam & irradiation lines Could also contribute to “8.4 General beam lines and irradiation equipment task” installing particle ID in beamline or testing some of the NuFact beam line monitoring equipment, like the polarimeter, beam Cherenkov or beam current transformer. WP9 : this is where most of the detector R&D is carried out. Testing of gaseous detectors (ie RPCs), or pixel detectors or granular calorimeters (ie CALICE) are studied here. Would need to investigate if it is of interest. Once beamlines are built, can bid for Transnational access (travel money to go to CERN to use beams) 4th Neutrino Factory International Design Study Meeting Mumbai, 12 October 2009

AIDA timescales Timeline: 26 October: define contents of WP, first draft of WP text and partners list with preliminary budget breakdown 9 November: Final list of partners, iteration on budget sharing and meeting with National Contacts 23 November: all text finalised by then Submission 3 December Timescale is tight and need to move now to make sure we are in it. I have already sent with preliminary list of testbeam plans but would like these to be finalised by the end of Mumbai meeting and make more concrete proposal Testbeam activities at CERN will also benefit non-Europeans: synergy between Minerva and also with INO 4th Neutrino Factory International Design Study Meeting Mumbai, 12 October 2009
