1 Breaking Laws

2 Drug and Alcohol Laws In the UK there are laws in place which control the way that drugs and alcohol are used. The reason why these laws have been passed is because of the harmful effects that alcohol and drugs can have on people.

3 Health problems caused by drugs and alcohol.
Drug abuse may lead to infections, especially those passed on by dirty needles (eg. HIV and hepatitis) Drug and alcohol abuse may cause problems in conceiving children. Drug and alcohol abuse may cause depression and difficulties coping with a normal life. Drugs and alcohol change how a person’s brain works and t his can lead to mental illness. The risk of cancers and cirrhosis of the liver is increased significantly by alcohol abuse. Drug and alcohol abuse may cause accidents. Loss of control means abusers are likely to get into fights and be hurt.

4 Problems to society caused by drugs and alcohol.
May lead to people being unable to work. Can lead to increased health spending on all forms of care – accidents, cancer, mental health and rehabilitation. May lead to addiction which can affect the way families function and may lead to the breakdown of marriages. May lead to people causing damage to public areas, which costs money to repair. May lead to reduced responsibility, for example driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs can cause accidents. Can lead to more fights which means an increase in spending on policing. People who are addicted may steal money to buy drugs or alcohol. More money on prisons and policing.
