2 I Social organization Algonquians had a simple and flexible social organization, well adapted to their nomadic way of life Iroquoian villages were made of hundred- and sometimes thousands of people, which required a more complex social organization and suited to their sedentary lifestyle

Day to day decisions were taken by the chiefs Complex decisions were taken by the council through consensus

5 Choosing the Chiefs In Iroquoian societies, the women chose the chiefs In Algonquian and Inuit communities, chiefs were selected by councils Chiefs were selected based on one’s bravery, eloquence and generosity:

6 Bravery/Courage Men would show their bravery when hunting and during war Female bravery was measured at the time of giving birth.

7 2. Eloquence The quality of someone who speaks well and is able to convince others 3. Generosity Sharing resources to maintain social ties Natives felt it was their duty to give, receive and give back

8 III Oral Tradition Myths & Creation Legends
Native communities conveyed culture and knowledge orally Elders were assigned the role of telling these stories Myths & Creation Legends Used to convey the relationship between humans and nature Used to convey religious values & social customs Often explained the origins of the world

9 IV The Role of the Shaman
Individuals called shamans had a superior power that enabled them to communicate with the spirit world. They could: Predict the future Interpret dreams Have more frequent visions Heal people Ward off evil
