The blood-brain barrier. A. Comparison between a typical nonbrain systemic capillary, which has spaces between endothelial lining cells that allow free exchange between the plasma and interstitial fluid, and a brain capillary, which has continuous tight junctions that seal the junctions between endothelial cells. Brain capillaries are also surrounded by glia (astrocytes). B. Transcellular transport across the blood-brain barrier; oxygen and carbon dioxide can diffuse freely through endothelial cells; glucose enters the brain by facilitated diffusion.
