Presentation on theme: "Transport in and out of cells"— Presentation transcript:

1 Transport in and out of cells
Give examples of molecules that move into and out of cells Describe the processes by which different kinds of molecules move Explain why different molecules are moved in different ways

2 What substances do cells exchange with their environment?
Can you name some substances that cells exchange with their surroundings? For each substance: Does it move into or out of cells, or both? How do you think it moves into or out of the cell?

3 Types of Transport Go to and enter the code 22rcxdd Watch the video and as you watch it make notes on the three ways molecules move into and out of cells. For each type of transport make sure you include: An example of a molecule An explanation of why the molecule moves Whether it requires energy Key terms from the video

4 Check your notes Check your notes for the following key terms.
Do you know what each term means? If any of them are missing you need to add them to your notes in the appropriate place! Passive Diffusion Concentration gradient Partially permeable Membrane Energy Active transport Oxygen / carbon dioxide Osmosis Active Against the concentration gradient Down the concentration gradient Glucose Water Solute concentration Carrier protein

5 Summary Table Copy and complete the table to summarise the key features of each type of transport: Feature Diffusion Osmosis Active Transport Example of molecule Direction (compared to concentration gradient) Does it require energy? Does it require a carrier protein? How does it work?

6 Name the type of transport
Definition The spreading out of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration. Does not require energy The diffusion of water from an area of high water concentration (dilute solution) to an area of low water concentration (concentrated solution) across a partially permeable membrane The movement of molecules against a concentration gradient (from an area of low concentration to an area of high concentration) across a membrane. This requires energy. Diffusion Osmosis Active Transport
