AMS maintains copyright so that it can act as steward of author’s intellectual property. © American Meteorological Society. Any use of material in this work that is determined to be “fair use” under Section 107 of the U.S. Copyright Act or that satisfies the conditions specified in Section 108 of the U.S. Copyright Act (17 USC §108, as revised by P.L ) does not require the AMS’s permission.

3 AMS and open access BAMS articles have been open since they went online in 1997 BAMS went online cover-to-cover in January 2009, but only available to individual members of the AMS.

4 AMS and open access All journal content online older than two years is open Open access institutional repositories (such as NCAR’s OpenSky) can post the PDF version of any article for which an employee of the institution was an author or coauthor six months after publication. Recently published content is only available with subscription

5 AMS Journal funding model
Subscription Income (43%) Author Charges (57%) A combination of subscription and author charge income allows: Generous partial (and some full) waivers of author charges for authors whose institutions cannot pay Paid clerical support for volunteer editors High editorial quality for the journals Preservation for future generations

6 Reducing the barrier of subscriptions
AMS subscriptions are among the most affordable in science: $0.15/page for institutions Members have access to all journals online for $80/yr The developing world has opportunities for full access at no cost: OARE (Online Access to Research in the Environment) [ AMS program to provide journals to the developing world The AMS will provide free access to any developing world institution on request, and we welcome recommendations from community.
