20.1 Elijah Duplissey Kaleb Wilson Ondreon Sluys Joey Gore Technology and communications

2 VOCABULARY Dynamo- A machine for converting mechanical energy into electrical energy; a generator. Aerodynamics- The study of the properties of moving air, and especially of the interaction between the air and solid bodies moving through it. Telegraph- A system for transmitting messages from a distance along a wire, especially one creating signals by making and breaking an electrical connection.

3 Impact of Technology In the 1870s manufacturers began looking for better power sources which led to the development of electricity. It was known that electricity passing through a wire could cause the wire to glow which was a promising new source of light for homes, streets, and factories. Light Bulbs were first produced in the 1840s. Electric motors began to replace steam engines in factories in late 1800s. Waterfalls such as the Niagara Falls began to be used to run huge dynamos, which are electric generators.

4 Impact of Communications
In the 1870s Alexander Graham Bell sent the human voice over a long distance with an electrical circuit. In 1876 Bell patented his telephone. In 1895 an Italian inventor named Guglielmo Marconi invented a way to send messages without wires. In 1901 the first message was sent across the Atlantic Ocean.

5 The development of new sources led to technological advances
Electrical power - Invention of the telegraph made by Guglielmo Marconi Internal Combustion Engine - Portable fuel to propel vehicles (airplanes) Electric Motor - Move vehicles Electric Generator - Run factories

6 Inventions of the late 1800s that improved communications
Alexander Graham Bell - telephone by electrical circuitry Guglielmo Marconi - Send messages without wire through space Marconi also created a wireless telegraph

7 Importance of the Internal Combustion Engine
It allowed people such as Henry Ford to produce his first automobile such as the Model T. provided enough power in a small enough size to enable engines for powered flight. Caused the modern automobile industry to occur
