3 Alfred Nobel Alfred Nobel was a Swedish scientist and engineer who created a fortune through his many inventions. When he died, he left instructions for most of his money to be used for an annual prize to be awarded to people who have “… during the preceding year, shall have conferred the greatest benefit to mankind.” These awards are in physics, chemistry, medicine, literature and promoting peace between nations.

4 Dynamite! Alfred Nobel was also famous for being the inventor of dynamite. Can you think why we might find this ironic now?

5 Nobel Prize

6 Nobel Laureate In Greek mythology, the god Apollo is represented wearing a laurel wreath on his head. A laurel wreath is a circular crown made of branches and leaves of the bay laurel (In latin: Laurus nobilis). In Ancient Greece, laurel wreaths were awarded to victors as a sign of honour - both in athletic competitions and in poetic meets.

7 Nelson Mandela “Let it never be said by future generations that indifference, cynicism or selfishness made us fail to live up to the ideals of humanism which the Nobel Peace Prize encapsulates." Nelson Mandela was given the Nobel Peace prize on 10th December 1993.
