THE STUDENTS Large class 28 students 15-16 year olds
10th grade Looping English students know each other and the teacher from last year 16 boys, 12 girls Mostly white middle class background of European decent ¼ students on free and reduced lunch Some Native American students-Stillaguamish One former ELL-Mexican A few students have trouble focusing but none on IEP or 504

LEARNING STANDARDS 10.SL.1 - Initiate and participate in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with divers partners on grades 9-10 topics, test, and issues, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly and persuasively. 10.W.10 - Write routinely over extended time frames (time for research, reflection, and revision) and shorter time frames (a single sitting or a day or two) for a range of tasks, purposes, and audiences

LEARNING TARGETS: DAY 1 Students will evaluate 12 items in order of importance to their survival in a simulated plane crash scenario. The students will argue and defend their opinions and collaborate to reach a group consensus.

LEARNING TARGET-HOMEWORK
Students will write a reflection on survival game exercise which will focus on the following: their observation of behavior-theirs and their classmates how smoothly the activity went and why or why not the role they played and why what they learned from the exercise especially about themselves

DAY 2 Students will articulate their observations and share their reflections on the previous day’s survival scenario in a whole group discussion. They will answer the guiding question for the unit “What does it take to be a survivor?” in their journals.

ASSESSMENTS Survivor scenario activity: Plane crash reflection
Teacher will type student responses evaluating discussion equity Plane crash reflection Teacher will evaluate student written responses for reflection on human behavior Journal reflection The teacher will evaluate students for synthesis of ideas: Based on the survival scenario, debrief and class discussions students will determine what it takes to survive

Decide to stay or go to nearest town Rank 12 items in order of importance All decisions must be unanimous The teacher is not on the plane with you! Read Debrief Score 12 item ranking If you exceed 30 you are dead!
