3 Definitions Impairment (손상) – Any loss or abnormality of psychological, physiological, or anatomical structure or function Disability (장애) – Any restriction or lack resulting from an impairment of ability in the manner or within the range considered normal for a human being Handicap (사회적 불리)– A disadvantage for a given individual resulting from an impairment or disability that limits or prevents the fulfillment of a role that is normal (depending on age, sex, and social-cultural factors)

4 Definition of PwDs Any person who has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities. “Disabled” does not mean “Unable”

5 Types of Disabilities Functional Physical disability-외부신체기능 장애
Chronic health disability- 내부 기관 장애 Mental health disability-정신적 장애

6 Functional physical disability(외부신체기능장애)
Physical disability (지체장애) –loss or paralysis of motor functions in all parts of external parts of body such as arms, legs, etc. Neurological impairment (뇌병변장애) – Loss of mortal functions and limitations in daily lives as a result of cerebral palsy (뇌성마비), stroke (뇌졸증), and brain injuries (뇌손상) Visual impairment (시각장애) - range from mild loss of clarity and short- sightedness to total blindness Hearing impairment (청각장애): A loss of decrease in perception of sound, ranging from deafness to a partial loss of high-pitch sounds Speech/-language disorder (언어장애): unable to produce speech sounds correctly or fluently, or has problems with his or her voice. Difficulties pronouncing sounds, or articulation disorders, stuttering, aphasia, etc. Facial disorder (안면장애): injuries, defects, facial nerve mutation, and aesthetic aspects of the mouth, teeth, jaws and face.

Kidney disability (신장장애)- Loss of kidney function and issues on Kidney dialysis (신장투석) Heart disability (심장장애)- Loss of heart function and respiratory problems Epilepsy (뇌전증(간질))-Neurological diseases and physical injuries Liver disability (간장애)- Loss of liver function and related co-morbid conditions Respiratory disability (호흡기장애)- Losses in functions of lung and respiratory organ systems Dyschezia & urinary disability (장루 요루장애) –Losses in control functions of defecation and urinary systems

8 Mental health disability-정신적 장애
Intellectual disability (지적 장애)- Synonymous with mental retardation. Refers to those with IQ of a general term that refers to a wide range of disorders related to the ability to speak, listen, read, write, & organize information. Autistic disorder (자폐성 장애)- neurological and developmental disorder that usually appears during the first three years of life. A child with autism appears to live in their own world, showing little interest in others and a lack of social awareness. Mental disorders (정신 장애) - a diagnosis of a behavioral or mental pattern that can cause suffering or a poor ability to function in ordinary life. e.g., depression, schizophrenia, mood disorders, bipolar disorder, etc.

9 Principles toward Social Services for the Disabled
Normalization (정상화): Making available patterns of life and condition of living that are as close as possible to those regularly experienced by the general population De-institutionalization (탈시설화)-towards group home programs, reformation of institutions, legal empowerment for the right of the disabled, and support and care in the community Empowerment (사회적 역할을 통한 역량강화)- Intensify valuable social roles for the disabled Social integration (사회통합)-guarantee social participation for the disabled as their human rights

10 Working principles Rehabilitation:
Early detection, assessment and intervention Appropriate medical care and treatment Psycho-social and other types of counseling and assistance Training in ADL and self-care, including the provision of special equipment Special education Vocational training and placement

Childhood and Youth Diagnosis and assessment Early childhood intervention Parent education and family support Special education and integration in mainstream pre-schools and schools Child abuse

Adults Employment (open and sheltered) Accommodation and independent living facilities Sexuality and marriage Sports and recreation Long-term care, including sibling support

PwD getting old and disabilities acquired in old age Health and medical care Mobility and accessibility Activities of daily living (eating, bathing, dressing, toileting, etc) Institutionalization

14 Debate on integrated education systems for the disabled
