The Tainos practiced the worshipping of many gods (polytheism) and conducted many religious ceremonies. They had an idol god called zemi. Zemi was made of wood, stone, bone or cotton. The zemi controlled everything such as sickness, weather, war, crops, harvest and peace.

Apart from that, they worshipped nature. As such, the had a sky, earth and moon god. A bowl of powdered tobacco called cahoba was placed before the zemi and the zemi was rubbed with cassava juice. The Tainos also practiced ancestral worship. They believed in spirits called opia ; and wore zemi around their necks for protection against opia.

Hindus make mention of names of different gods e.g. Shiva, Krishna. Churches conduct religious ceremonies and rites; and recite creed and beliefs. Buddhism has an idol that they pray to. While the Tainos used tobacco, Rastafarians use ganja.

While the Tainos used cassava juice, Roman Catholic uses incense. Others use olive oil. Revivalism practices ancestral worship just like the Tainos. People believe in spirits and duppy. People wear guard rings and necklaces for protection.
