2 Problem Issues: Come from different sources
Illiteracy “low-income families, certain minority groups, and English language learners” Come from different sources Common Core not always helpful Literacy gap  knowledge gap

3 Affected Children of all ages
31% of students in middle school/junior high made the mark, 48% in elementary school were considered proficient and 51% in middle school

4 What is Happening Today
Common Core (State Standards for English Language Arts) Programs Canine-assisted reading programs Teachers in schools are coming up with their own creative programs

5 Today (continued) “I have found that their learning is so much more authentic and extensive when I simply open the door for them to share what they notice. Furthermore, they are learning a lot from one another as they listen to the ideas and observations from their peers. They are empowered as they realize that I am not the only one who has things to teach them; they can teach one another.” –Kristen Marchiando “Not only were the students in love with their reading, they were reading and thinking with purpose. This is what real readers do. We talk, we laugh, we question, and we enjoy books together.” –Megan Kramer
