6 High School Diploma/GED
Every student has a story! BRIAN This is Tammy Van De Walker. She came to us when she began having a hard time helping her daughter Ashley with her homework. Tammy had only passed nine classes in high school. While understanding getting a GED would be much quicker, she was determined to become a high school graduate. She worked diligently passing class after class and on Tuesday, June 19, 2012 (pause) after three years of hard work and sacrifice (pause) the day before her oldest daughter graduated from El Capitan High School, (pause) Tammy Van De Walker became an official high school graduate. CLICK Last year there were 112 graduates and every one of them had their own story of obstacles they’ve overcome. We are more than just “night school”. We are a second chance. More than just “night school”!

CLICK We offer HS Diploma and GED classes 11 hours a day and GED tests 10 times weekly, helping more than 1000 members of our community to become positive contributing members of society. We offer credit recovery programs on each of our high school campuses in an effort to help current students graduate with their class. In the school year, 560 classes were completed through Grossmont Adult School. We’ve reached out to other agencies servicing the East County as well. The East County Transitional Living Center serves newly homeless families and singles recovering from issues. Their goal is to help these newly homes avoid becoming permanently homeless. Grossmont Adult recently started a GED program there with our first two students ready to test this month.

We are here to let you know that CTE for adults is strong in our District as well. Just last year we had over 8,000 adult CTE students in numerous career-themed classes that received job-ready skills. Many of these students are now working in their industry due to the great instruction, equipment, and facilities available to them. Still others are in apprenticeship programs that will further their skills in the industry in which they currently work. CLICK Automotive Repair

With a specific focus on the health care industry, HOC offers adults a wide variety of courses specific to the medical field. Many of our programs offer students state certifications upon completion that give our students an advantage over other applicants. And, last year 77% of our student population continued their health care education or immediately got jobs in the medical field. HOC has a great reputation in our community! In fact, Kaiser Hospital thinks so highly of our programs, that we will soon be entering into a collaborative agreement. In an effort to increase patient care, Kaiser Hospital would like to enroll 59 of their currently employed “Unit Assistants” into our Certified Nursing Assistant program. They had the option of calling many educational programs for this arrangement, but they only called one; us! They are confident in our programs due to the successes that our students have had at their many facilities. At the Grossmont Health Occupations Center, many students are completing classes and becoming a vital part of the healthcare team. CLICK Medical Lab Assistant Emergency Medical Technician

Bell ringing Success stories PHYLLIS Ring that bell! Each time a customer gets a job the office staff rings the bell!!!  Everyone knows this is good news! One of our most recent successes is a customer who attended Foothills Adult School and received her GED at the age of 40. She came to ECCC because she lost her job. She attended the Career Change and Job Search Workshops and began working with an Employment Advisor.  Because she had her GED,  she was able to enter vocational training to begin her health-related career as a Certified Nurses Assistant. She was hired in her new job July 2012. CLICK Ring that bell!

12 English as a Second Language
3,637 students learning the English language 52 classes at 19 locations Citizenship classes Community Based English Tutoring program (CBET) ROBYN El Cajon Adult Center helps more than 3,500 people new to our country, not only learn the English language, but to educate them about American culture and customs.  Classes are available at 19 different sites ranging from Blossom Valley to Spring Valley to Santee. Community Based English Tutoring, also known as CBET, is an invaluable program because it enables ESL students to interact with the community at large.  CBET classes are offered on local elementary school campuses, and our Adult ESL students take part in meetings with their children's teachers, discuss health issues with medical professionals, volunteer in classrooms to assist the teachers, and become an integral part of their surrounding community.  An adult CBET student recently had to take her child to Children’s hospital and came back to class crying. (pause) She wasn’t crying because of her child, he was fine. She was crying because she was so grateful to have the English skills needed to communicate with her child's doctor. This is one of many success stories I could share with you. CLICK

13 Correctional Education
7 detention facilities 5,500 inmate students English literacy GED preparation and testing Vocational/Career Technical Education classes Prepares inmates for re-entry into the job market TIM Grossmont Adult School has been working with the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department providing inmate education services for over 15 years at all seven of their adult level detention facilities. The program’s facilities stretch from Vista in the north to San Ysidro on the south end of the county. The goal of our Correctional Ed program is to provide inmate students with the knowledge and skills to help them transition back into the general public and become productive citizens. In a typical year, the program has approximately 300 students pass the GED test before they leave the detention facilities. Our Career Technical Education classes provide each student with the knowledge, skills, and training in a variety of employment areas. These classes not only teach employable skills, but also produce professional quality products. For example, the commercial sewing class students at the Las Colinas Detention Facility produce the clothing worn by every inmate in each of the seven facilities. Our Correctional Ed Printing class at East Mesa Detention Facility produces the retirement plaques presented at our own Golden Apple awards ceremony each year. Our Correctional Ed program gives over 5,500 inmates a year a second chance in life and a great opportunity to become productive citizens. CLICK

Introduction to Computers Microsoft Office Suite Computerized Accounting Web Page Design MacIntosh classes Social Media Facebook LinkedIn Google Documents JEFF With over 2,000 students enrolled in our computer classes we have a class to fit most every need. We’ve recently converted one of our PC labs to a Mac lab so we can provide classes for both Mac and PC users. We offer classes for all ability levels. Beginners often have no previous computer experience, in fact, they may never have turned a computer on. Students looking for a new job or job promotion take Word, Excel, or Quickbooks classes. Keeping up with the latest in Social Media is important. Many of our students have children and grandchildren on Facebook but do not know how to use it. So we put together a series of social media classes on Friday mornings to help them communicate with family and friends. In addition to Facebook we offer LinkedIn, Google Documents, and Twitter. If your children or grandchildren use social media to communicate, you are welcome to join one of our Friday classes! Feedback from our students has been consistent and very positive. There are very few places in San Diego County that an adult can go for instruction on the basics of computer operation. Grossmont Adult School meets that need. CLICK
