1 Club Membership Rev 4 – Sep 2017

2 Welcome to General Aviation
Becoming a pilot and staying current and proficient is a lifelong commitment. The benefits of being a pilot are numerous. Being part of the aviation community is fun and rewarding Travel by air to local airports makes being a pilot incredibly convenient. The freedom, independence, and satisfaction felt are like nothing else There are many ways to learn to fly or have access to an airplane. None of them are cheap (you won’t save any money flying yourself), but as a club we (the members) all contribute to make it less expensive. Value is much more than just the monetary cost. The personal time commitments required of this club and amount of responsibility you are willing to personally assume are items you must consider to determine if BEFC is the right value proposition for you.

3 BEFC Organization BEFC is a flying club made up of Boeing aviation enthusiast pilots who want to own and fly their own aircraft. If you are interested in both flying and the ‘hands-on’ care & maintaining of the aircraft then we are the right place for you. Each member helps maintain the planes, club assets & supplies, helping on work days or as needed. Each member has to handle / move aircraft. Open/close/secure the hangar and club assets, and perform post flight refueling & clean up. As a BEFC club member we want you to be part of the group’s safety, educational, & social elements too. BEFC is incorporated as a recreational non-profit. The board members are uncompensated. We do occasionally reimburse our members who are licensed mechanics for a/c work requiring a sign off.

4 Membership Successful members of BEFC:
Want to participate in the club. Want to keep their account in good financial standing, and their pilot records current. Want to become better pilots and help others be better pilots too. Want to learn about owning & maintaining an airplane and will participate in work days and ad-hoc as needed club tasks. Will accept responsibility for the safe operation of the club aircraft and will follow club rules. Will report squawks and/or issues and ground the plane if required. Will never just leave something “for the next guy”. We also have an expectation that a member is seeking a long term association, and that students who we allow to use our assets will continue to remain club members after obtaining their pilot’s license.

5 Instruction / Training
Unrealistic expectations for what a the club does & does not provide have occasionally led to frustration and misunderstandings. The BEFC By-Laws do not specify any club responsibility for teaching student pilots. For example, there is no training officer or chief flight instructor like some clubs provide. The By-Laws only require that a member seek & obtain board approval for any CFI who will instruct them in a club airplane. However, we have had many members earn their wings with us. We certainly will assist with connecting you with an approved CFI, as well as assist and encourage you in your pilot journey.

6 Instruction / Training
Why BEFC is not like flight training school: Flight schools provide flight instructors and aircraft that are serviced daily by a line crew staff. Many times they have their own in-house mechanics & maintenance shop. At a flight school you can come to the airport, be confident the plane is ready, take a flight lesson, check-in the plane & hand it to the line crew for servicing, and be done. There will be aircraft down time. It just happens. Be honest with yourself on level of time commitment you are willing to make. There are many fine flight schools in the STL area that focus on the “learn to fly” mission & will serve you much better if that’s your only goal.

7 Aircraft Upkeep Its natural to think of aircraft ownership analogous to car ownership. While there are some similarities, this is a very poor analogy. The Costs, Time, Procedures, Documentation, Certification, & Regulations can easily be 10 times greater on an aircraft. All Aircraft require inspections & maintenance. This can lead to unexpected down times. All of us would love to expand our fleet to increase the availability/variety. We discuss frequently but the true costs involved make this a tricky problem of growth management.

8 Summary Being part of a club has benefits for safety, camaraderie and friendships that we think are important and hope you do too. Maintaining / owning an aircraft is a commitment and responsibility over and above learning to fly. The benefits and rewards of maintaining the airplanes are a much more thorough understanding of the aircraft & its systems. This in tern will make you a better pilot. If you like what you have read and want to join a flying club, then we would like to have you as a BEFC member. Its likely you have questions… please call to discuss.
