Monday, April 4 Lesson 10.3 Surface Areas of Rectangular Prisms

20 Surface Areas of Rectangular Prisms
Objective: To find the surface area of rectangular prisms.

21 Surface Areas of Rectangular Prisms
The surface area (SA) of a three dimensional figure is the outer face or exterior boundary of the figure.

22 Surface Areas of Rectangular Prisms
In the text book, the formula for the SA of a rectangular prism is as follows: SA = 2lw + 2lh + 2wh This formula only works for a rectangular prism.

23 Surface Areas of Rectangular Prisms
I use a universal formula that works to find the SA for all prisms, and with slight a modification pyramids as well. You can use any method you wish.

24 Surface Areas of Rectangular Prisms
Surface Area of a Prism The surface area (SA) of a prism is 2 x Floor Area + Floor Perimeter x height, or SA = 2F + ph

25 Surface Areas of Rectangular Prisms
Find the SA of the rectangular prism. To Find the SA of a Prism. Step 1 – Determine the area of the floor. Draw this in your notes.

26 Surface Areas of Rectangular Prisms
Find the SA of the rectangular prism. F = 4 ∙ 10 = 40 To Find the SA of a Prism. Step 1 – Determine the area of the floor. The upper case “F” represents an area, rather than a length.

27 Surface Areas of Rectangular Prisms
Find the SA of the rectangular prism. F = 40 To Find the SA of a Prism. Step 2 – Determine the perimeter of the floor.

28 Surface Areas of Rectangular Prisms
Find the SA of the rectangular prism. F = 40 p = =28 To Find the SA of a Prism. Step 2 – Determine the perimeter of the floor.

29 Surface Areas of Rectangular Prisms
Find the SA of the rectangular prism. F = 40 p = 28 To Find the SA of a Prism. Step 3 – Determine the height of the prism.

30 Surface Areas of Rectangular Prisms
Find the SA of the rectangular prism. F = 40 p = 28 h = 6 To Find the SA of a Prism. Step 3 – Determine the height of the prism.

31 Surface Areas of Rectangular Prisms
Find the SA of the rectangular prism. F = 40 p = 28 h = 6 To Find the SA of a Prism. Step 4 – Insert into the formula and solve.

32 Surface Areas of Rectangular Prisms
Find the SA of the rectangular prism. F = 40 p = 28 h = 6 SA = 2F + ph SA =2∙40+28∙6 = = 248ft² To Find the SA of a Prism. Step 4 – Insert into the formula and solve.

33 Surface Areas of Rectangular Prisms
Find the SA of the rectangular prism. Do this on your own.

34 Surface Areas of Rectangular Prisms
Find the SA of the rectangular prism. F = 33.6, p = 23.6, h = 6 SA = 2F + ph SA =2∙ ∙6 = = 208.8cm²

35 Surface Areas of Rectangular Prisms
Find the SA of the rectangular prism. Do this on your own.

36 Surface Areas of Rectangular Prisms
Find the SA of the rectangular prism. F = 35, p = 24, h = 4 SA = 2F + ph SA =2∙35+24∙4 = = 166ft²

37 Surface Areas of Rectangular Prisms
Another way to find the SA is to deconstruct the shape into a net. The surface area (SA) of a prism is the sum of all the areas of it’s faces.
