What information do they contain. Where to find their information How to search Some useful tips when searching Census records post 1911

3 Census Records- What are they
The 1901 and 1911 censuses are the only surviving full censuses of Ireland open to the public. Both censuses cover the island of Ireland. They were released to public inspection in 1961, because of the stream of requests for information about people's ages, particularly those born before civil registration of births began in 1864. Ireland is unusual among English-speaking census-taking countries in that our original household manuscript returns survive. These are the forms filled out and signed by the head of each household on census night. Most other countries only have Enumerators' books, where family details were transcribed by the person charged with collecting the census information

4 An Example of a Census ‘Form A’

5 What Information Do They Contain
As can be seen from the previous example the Census form contains the following information; Name and Surname Relationship in Family Religion Education Age Occupation Particulars of Marriage Children Where born Irish Language

6 Where To Find Their Information
As my colleagues have already displayed through their own presentations, information within the Census 1901 and respectively can be obtained through various sites these are as follows; National Archives Ancestry.com

7 How To Search A search can be conducted by inputting any of the following information; Surname Forename Institution It is important to remember that the names on this site have been transcribed as they were written into the census forms. We have not corrected spellings. Some names are illegible, or appear on a damaged form. You may, therefore, have to try a number of strategies to find the person you seek. Enter forename and surname of the individual you seek in the relevant boxes. Enter the county they lived in. If you know the townland or street where the person lived, enter that in the relevant box. If you know the person's age, enter that, and the search will cover that age plus or minus 5 years. You should also enter the person's sex. ( PLEASE NOTE THE MORE INFORMATION THAT IS ENTERED, THE NARROWER THE SEARCH)

13 Some Useful Tips When Searching
When entering information into the search engines, be as specific as possible, i.e.. Enter as much qualifying information as possible such as siblings etc. Where Census information excels over other forms of information is in the area of detail. Due to the level of information contained, it provides further information on other family members.
