Kingdom Protista
2
What are Protists? Protists are single or many-celled organisms that live in moist or wet surroundings. Some protists contain chlorophyll and make their own food, others don’t. Protists are plant-like, animal-like, and fungus-like.
3
What are Algae? Algae are plant-like protists that contain chlorophyll and can make their own food. NOT all algae are GREEN!!!
4
Euglena Euglena have characteristics of plants and animals.
They contain chloroplasts which can produce carbohydrates. When no sunlight is available, they consume other food. They move using a whip-like tail called a FLAGELLA.

Euglena Diagrams
6
Diatoms Diatoms are golden brown aglae that store food in the form of oil. They reproduce in extremely large numbers and have a variety of shapes.
7
Spirogyra Spirogyra is a chain-like algae that has spiral shaped chloroplasts.
8
Volvox Volvox is ball-shaped and lives in colonies.
The colony rolls through the water using flagella.
9
Animal-like Protists:
Flagellates: have flagella Ciliates: have cilia Pseudopods: have foot-like extensions
10
Ciliates Ciliates move using short, threadlike structures that surround the body. Example: Paramecium.
11
Pseudopods Pseudopod means “false foot.”
Pseudopods are foot-like extensions that the organism uses to move and trap food. Example: Amoeba
