The Assassination Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie.
Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, sat next to his wife Sophie, Duchess of Hohenberg on the back seat of an open-topped car in a motorcade in Sarajevo on June 28, They were on their way to the military hospital to visit those injured by a hand grenade thrown at the royal car earlier in the day. When their driver mistakenly turned right into Franz Joseph Street, 19 year-old Serbian Gavrilo Princip, happened to be standing on the corner. Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie.

The Assassination Cont.
When the driver stopped to back up onto Appel Quay, Princip fired his pistol at the car. The first bullet penetrated the side of the car and hit Sophie in the abdomen. The second bullet hit Franz Ferdinand in the neck, piercing his jugular and lodging in his spine. Both wounds were fatal. This caused countries allied with Austria-Hungary (the Triple Alliance) and countries allied with Serbia (the Triple Entente Powers) to declare war on each other, starting World War I. The gun Gavrilo Princip used.

The Beginning of World War I
Ferdinand's assassination at the hands of Serbian nationalist Gavrilo Princip resulted in demands against the Kingdom of Serbia. Several alliances that had been formed over the past decades were invoked, so within weeks the major powers were at war; with all having colonies, the conflict soon spread around the world. These are the types of guns used in WWI.
