2. Workshop aims
To understand what your child is taught and how they are assessed.
To understand how your child learns through both adult led and child initiated activities – “purposeful play” situations
To become aware of useful resources that will support my child in their mathematical understanding.
To understand how to help my child at home to improve their mathematical skills.
Make it fun, interesting and ensure your child is supported. DO NOT TEST!
Build a love, not a fear of maths.

3. What is maths?
Is maths only to do with knowing the names of numbers, counting by rote and naming shapes??? or is there a lot more to it?....

4. What are the steps in learning ...? What to expect?
I can say some number names in order
I understand 1, 2. Eg: just take one, you need two.
I can show you which group of toys has more
I can use words like more or a lot to describe amounts
I use words related to size; big, small
I can sort a collection of objects by shape or size so they are altogether.
I understand the order of things such as I get out of bed then get dressed
I can use some number names and words like more than, fewer than
I can say numbers in order from
I like to count objects, jumps, steps
I know that numbers tell me how many there are – 8 biscuits on a plate
I use my fingers or marks to show how many.
Sometimes I can match a number to the correct quantity – 3 to 3 balls
I like lining up shapes, fitting shapes, puzzles
I see shapes when we are outdoors like square windows
I can use words like under, behind, in front
I like to build & construct and talk about what I am making
I recognise numbers of personal significance – how old I am
I can count 5 objects on a 1:1 basis
I recognise numbers 1 to 5
I can count 10 objects on a 1:1 basis
I recognise numbers 1 to 10
I can match the right number to a group of 1 – 5 objects
I can guess how many in a bucket, then count to check
I can say what number is next
I can say which number is bigger or more or less
I can put two baskets of things together and tell you how many altogether
I can use words like more, add, less, take away
I can use marks and pictures to show you my counting
I am beginning to use shape names like circle, triangle, square, cylinder, cube,
I can tell you which thing is heavy, light, when you give me 2 things.
I can tell you which thing is full, empty
I use positional language like under, behind, on, in.
I am beginning to use words like money, pound, pence when working in a shop
I can use things to make patterns like buttons and bricks
I can order thing by length – shortest, longest, shorter, longer
Children need lots of practice & repetition to become secure in a skill. We give lots of time to consolidate their learning through a variety of “purposeful play” opportunities.

6. Developing number recognition
I recognise numbers
1 to 5
I can say number names in order and match numbers 1 – 6.
I recognise numbers of personal significance – how old I am

7. Developing COUNTING language & skills
I can count 7 objects on a 1:1 basis
I can make a pattern and know what is next ....

8. Developing LABELLING language & skills
We can sort a collection of objects by colour, size and shape
I can use marks to show you my counting
I can use words like more, same
I use my fingers to show how many.

9. Developing size & shape language
We can talk about what shape we are making and can choose bricks to fit
I can find three twigs and make them into a triangle. I know it has three sides and three corners.

10. Learning about space and measure ...
I can talk about order and distance; 1st, 2nd, furthest
I can use directional words like up, down, along, straight, right, left

11. Maths in every day life... What have I done today?
How does this link to mathematics?

12. Opportunities at home ....
Share the daily mathematical problems you encounter with your children; how many plates and cups for dinner, how much milk is in the fridge, how many more cartons do we need?
Dictate shopping lists & let the children put away the shopping into the right cupboards
Look at bus timetables and talk about how long journeys take to relative’s house or to the sea side, or to France or Africa!
DIY and gardening are other activities you can model and share and both are rich in mathematical opportunities for young children
Cooking together – how many more cake cases to fill?
Sorting the washing etc……. Matching socks
Number rhymes – 5 little bears, this old man he played one.
Games - bingo, fishing game, dominoes ....
Number spotting – I can see a number 3 here, can you see another one?
Shape spotting – lets go looking for circles today ....

13. Is maths all about numbers and counting???
Review – how can we support & develop
Make it fun - Don’t test! Give clues – always support.
It’s important that mathematics isn’t just a school thing, it’s about every day life...
