SFP Transceivers it.de/de/produkte/blueoptics/transceiver/sfpplus.html

2 What Is SFP? SFP stands for Small Form-factor Pluggable transceiver. It is a pluggable version of SFF. Companies like Agilent, IBM, Lucent, Siemens, Infineon, AMP/Tyco, and others are utilizing SFP which is administered by MSA (Multisource agreements. In the rear of the device, you will find 10I/O connections. This device merge switch, router, media converter and other to a fiber optic or a copper networking cable. Generally, an SFP transceivers are used for telecommunications and data communications and they support SDH/SONET, Gigabit Ethernet, Fibre Channel, etc.

3 What Are The Benefits Of These Devices?
Since it is pluggable, this makes it conceivable to improve the optical interface at the last step of card manufacturing. It is also possible to accommodate different connector interfaces or a mix of SX and LX SFP. SFP cage is covering attached to the PCB board to accept the transceiver. This not only provides an easy replacement to the system but also eliminates extra manufacturing steps and reduces cost. Since the optical element is separated from soldering process, SFP transceivers have high optical authenticity and permit the use of higher soldering temperatures.

4 Kind Of SFP explained in Details:
SFP transceivers are available for both single mode fiber and multimode fiber. They are configured with 850nm VCSEL laser on 550m multimode fiber (SX), 1310nm laser over 10km single mode fiber (LX), 1550nm laser over 40km (XD), 80km (ZX), 120km (EX or EZX) single mode fiber and DWDM transceivers. The industry has recently developed enhancements to the SFP MSA, known as SFP Plus (SFP +), which is designed for higher data rates, lower cost and better thermal performance. SFP+ can support 8.5Gbit/s and 10.52Gbit/s Fibre Channel, 10Gbit/s Ethernet (10GBase SR, LR, and LRM), SONET OC-192 (9.95Gbit/s), and G.709 "OTU-2" (10.7 Gbit/s).

5 SFP transceivers are prepared with a variety of transmitter and receiver types which allows an individual to choose the appropriate transceivers for each link which are needed for optical reach over the actual optical fiber type(e.g. multi-mode fiber or single-mode fiber).

6 Transceivers are most often designated by the standard transmission speed on the medium (e.g Gbit/s for Gigabit Ethernet or Gbit/s for 10 Gigabit Ethernet). Sometimes, these transceivers are marked with their ethernet speed or a higher speed. SFP transceivers help companies reach their objectives of broad bandwidth, small physical size and mass, and ease of removal and replacement.

7 10 Gbit/s SFP+ The enhanced small form-factor pluggable (SFP+) is an enhanced version of the SFP that supports data rates up to 16 Gbit/s. The SFP+ specification was first published on May 9, 2006, and version 4.1 published on July 6, 2009.[11] SFP+ supports 8 Gbit/s Fibre Channel, 10 Gigabit Ethernet and Optical Transport Network standard OTU2. It is a popular industry format supported by many network component vendors. 10 Gbit/s SFP+ modules are exactly the same dimensions as regular SFPs, allowing the equipment manufacturer to re-use existing physical designs for 24 and 48-port switches and modular linecards. Although the SFP+ standard does not include mention of 16G Fibre Channel it can be used at this speed.[12] Besides the data rate, the big difference between 8G Fibre Channel and 16G Fibre Channel is the encoding method. 64b/66b encoding used for 16G is a more efficient encoding mechanism than 8b/10b used for 8G, and allows for the data rate to double without doubling the line rate. The result is the  Gbit/s line rate for 16G Fibre Channel. In comparison to earlier XENPAK or XFP modules, SFP+ modules leave more circuitry to be implemented on the host board instead of inside the module.[13] Through the use of an active electronic adapter, SFP+ modules may be used in older equipment with XENPAKports.[14] SFP+ modules can be described as 'limiting' or 'linear' types; this describes the functionality of the inbuilt electronics. Limiting SFP+ modules include a signal amplifier to re-shape the (degraded) received signal whereas linear ones do not. Linear modules are mainly used with the low bandwidth standards such as 10GBASE-LRM; otherwise, limiting modules are preferred.[15] SFP+ also introduces Direct Attach for connecting two SFP+ ports without dedicated transceivers.

8 25 Gbit/s SFP28 SFP28 is a 25 Gbit/s interface which has evolved from 100 Gigabit Ethernet, which is typically implemented with 4 × 25 Gbit/s data lanes. Identical in mechanical dimensions to SFP and SFP+, SFP28 implements one 28 Gbit/s lane[16] (25 Gbit/s + error correction) for top-of-rack switch to server connectivity.[17] SFP28 may also be used to "break out" a single 100GbE port in a top-of-rack switch into four 25 Gbit/s individual server connections. SFP28 functions with both optical and copper interconnects. For very short distances of 5 meters or less, as with 10 Gbit/s SFP+ "direct attach" cables, passive copper SFP28 modules integrate cable and transceivers into a single fixed-configuration module. 25 Gbit/s interfaces are also implemented using the QSFP transceiver form factor. 25 Gbit/s copper Direct attach cables, 1 to 5 meters in length.[18] 25 Gbit/s fiber 850 nm SR using two strands of multimode fiber, distances up to 100 meters on OM4 grade multimode cable.[19] 1310 nm LR using two strands of singlemode fiber,[20] distances from 5 to 20 km depending on optical link budget.

9 Following are some applications of Transceiver Modules:
1. FTTH (GPON, GEPON, Point to Point) 2. Base Station (3G SFP CPRI/ 6G SFP+ CPRI) 3. Fiber Channel (4G SFP/ 8G SFP+), 4.Ethernet systems (from 100Mbps to 10Gbps with different form factor / SFF, SFP, XFP, and SFP+).
