1 Metals, Nonmetals, and Metalloids
8.5C Interpret the arrangement of the Periodic Table to explain how properties are used to classify elements.

2 The Periodic Table is classified based on shared characteristics.
Destiny Chavez Metals, Nonmetals, and Metalloids 1st Period August 24,2016 What categories can we classify the periodic table into? The Periodic Table is classified based on shared characteristics. 3 main categories 1. Metals 2. Nonmetals 3. Metalloids

3 Metals- most are found in the middle and left side (except hydrogen)

Metals- most are found in the middle and left side (except hydrogen) • Hard and shiny Conduct heat and electricity Malleable- can be hammered and flattened Ductile- can be stretched into wire Few valence electrons •Examples: aluminum (Al), gold (Au), iron (Fe)

6 Metals, Nonmetals, and Metalloids
Destiny Chavez Metals, Nonmetals, and Metalloids 1st Period August 24,2016 What categories can we classify the periodic table into? Nonmetals -All found on the right side of periodic table except hydrogen. • Generally gases and brittle solids • Dull surface • Insulators (block heat and cold energy) • Have more valence electrons • Receive electrons or share when reacting with other elements • Examples: hydrogen (H), sulfur (S), neon (Ne)

8 Sulfur is Brittle Gases Copper Wire Insulated with plastic Coal is dull

9 • Found on the staircase (7 total)
Destiny Chavez Metals, Nonmetals, and Metalloids 1st Period August 24,2016 What categories can we classify the periodic table into? Metalloids • Found on the staircase (7 total) • Have properties of both metals & nonmetals • Examples: boron (B), silicon (Si), arsenic (As) • Semiconductors of electricity
