1 Providing Transparent and Unbiased Information for Students
How Accessible and Relevant Information Can Help Social Mobility Steven Edwards – bestcours4me.com

2 Two Sections Why information matters for students, particularly for social mobility How bestCourse4me is trying to help

3 Why Provide Information?
Research, (e.g. Sutton Trust) shows poor understanding of the benefits of a degree income employability career prospects soft benefits (job satisfaction, happiness, fulfilling dreams) Big disadvantage of a degree - DEBT

4 Better information fits students to courses better
How Information Helps Set expectations and give concrete benefits: Income benefits (avg 72% higher pay) Career access (most programmers have a numerate degree) Course choice (know where courses lead) Institution choice (smaller effect than subject) Better information fits students to courses better

5 Our USP is that we provide real labour market information on careers and wages of graduates We will then provide information on “routes thru the system” i.e. How students get to read what they want So not just about the economic value of degree but also about enabling students to study the subject they love at the institution they think is optimal for them

6 Summary Students need, and may have a right to, accurate and relevant information Tuition fees increase the need for information Better course selection by students (and better A level and GCSE selection) Fewer able students miss university – better social mobility No subjective information – all unmassaged statistics
