1 Writing coverage 40-60 months
This is a breakdown of the writing coverage which should be taught to ensure children meet the month age band in Writing.

Handwriting: Phonics: Introduce the use of simple sentences using phase 2 and 3 phonics and familiar key words. clap syllables in words and words in sentences. Provide word banks to support writing and sentence structure. To teach the correct letter formation of all letters in the alphabet. Writing is plausible, neat and can be read by others. Children begin to use finger spaces and have more control of letter size. Children confident in phase 2 phonics and are beginning to use and recognise phase 3. Words are phonetically plausible and children are using these phases independently. Writing Gives meanings to marks they make as they draw, write and paint. Begins to break the flow of speech into words. Continues a rhyming string and hears and says the initial sounds in words. Can segment the sounds in simple words and blend them together. Links sounds to letters, naming and sounding the letters of the alphabet. Uses some clearly identifiable letters to communicate meaning, representing some sounds correctly and in sequence. Writes own name and other things such as labels, captions and attempts to write short sentences in meaningful contexts. Rhyming strings: Common, tricky and high frequency words. Writing: Different purposes of writing are taught such as stories, information, poetry, lists, invitations and cards. Teach key vocabulary for certain writing styles and adapt to the children's interest. Children write simple sentences and key words. Children are exposed to rhyme and alliteration and begin to hear the flow of speech. Teach rhyming strings and begin to clap and words in sentences. Initial sounds are taught to develop rhyming strings and sentence structure. Children can write their own name and some familiar words independently. Expose children to tricky words and high frequency words- phase2 and 3.
