1 Solar and Lunar Eclipses Chapter 6.2
NOTES Solar and Lunar Eclipses Chapter 6.2

2 What does ECLIPSE mean? The partial or complete blocking “darkness” of one celestial body by another

3 What causes an ECLIPSE? The revolution of the Moon

4 ECLIPSES occur… ECLIPSES occur when the Earth or Moon temporarily blocks sunlight from reaching the other ECLIPSES can ONLY occur when the Sun, Moon, and Earth line up perfectly

5 SOLAR ECLIPSE Solar Eclipse (Solar = Sun Eclipse = Blocked)
Can only occur during the New Moon phase Can only occur during daytime hours Occurs when the Moon moves directly between the Sun and Earth and it casts a shadow over part of the Earth Umbra – total shadow (umbrella) Penumbra – partial shadow

6 SOLAR ECLIPSE MOON UMBRA SUN EARTH PENUMBRA

7 SOLAR ECLIPSE

8 SOLAR ECLIPSE The visible part of the Sun during a total eclipse is called the Corona (crown) CORONA

9 LUNAR ECLIPSE Lunar Eclipse (Lunar = Moon Eclipse = Blocked)
Can only occur during the Full Moon phase Can only occur during nighttime hours Occurs when the Moon moves into Earth’s shadow; the Earth is between the Sun and the Moon.

10 LUNAR ECLIPSE MOON PENUMBRA SUN EARTH PENUMBRA UMBRA

11 LUNAR ECLIPSE

12 Winter Solstice Lunar Eclipse

13 Time to Demonstrate… Create a Solar and Lunar Eclipse!
Captains-Grab the baggie of Numbers… 1-Moon (white dough) 2-Earth (blue dough) 3-Sun (light) 4-Orbit (pipe cleaner) 5-Manager/Fact Checker (use notes to verify)

14 Time to Demonstrate… 1-Moon (create a 1-inch ball)
2-Earth (create 4-inch ball –all the dough) 3-Sun (turn on light when time) 4-Orbit (stick the ends of the pipe cleaner in either side of the moon to create an “orbit”) 5-Manager/Fact Checker (use notes to verify accuracy of group diagram)

15 Time to Demonstrate… SOLAR ECLIPSE

16 Time to Demonstrate… LUNAR ECLIPSE

17 WRAP-UP! What does ECLIPSE mean? What are the two types of ECLIPSES?

18 Thinking Questions: Which eclipse lasts longer? Solar or Lunar? Why?
Why have only a few people experienced a total solar eclipse?

19 EXIT SLIP: 1. Solar or Lunar 2. Solar or Lunar
