Do you believe that animation can bring out strong emotions in people? For example, can animated films like this one cause people in an audience to cry, to feel sadness, and to strongly identify with the characters? If so, how does a “cartoon” do these things?

4. Keiji Nakagawa, the cartoonist who made this film, survived the atomic bomb although other members of his family were killed. Why do you think he became an anti-war artist and decided to dedicate his life to educating people about the need for world peace? Why did he not grow up hating the United States and the American people?

5. At one time in the world only two nations (the United States and the former Soviet Union) had nuclear weapons. Today, several nations have nuclear weapons, and in the near future it’s possible that even some individuals may be able to obtain “small” nuclear weapons. What doyou think should be done to prevent the use of nuclear weapons in the world?

6. “Barefoot Gen” is an example of how one man used his talents as an artist to educate others about the horrors of war and the need for peace. For yourself as a college student here at CSUN, are there ways that you can use your talents and the knowledge you are gaining from classes to respond to problems in the world today, such as war, poverty, racism, sexism, violence against children, and other issues? How specifically could you use your talents and your knowledge?
