1 Thank you for not chewing gum 
Materials: Pencil Notebook Folder Lab Text – pg. B-21 September 19 Today’s Agenda: Bell work Data Analysis Lab Objective: Today we will analyze the results of our experiment. Daily Question: How will you conclude your data analysis?

2 Act 16 – Lab report Follow the procedure in the book through step 5.
Purpose: The purpose of this lab is to… Hypothesis: (put the 5 properties you are testing in your hypothesis) Background Research: (use the article provided, BP or internet research) Variables Independent: What are you changing? Dependent: What are you finding out? Materials: What materials will you need to test the 5 properties? Procedure: How will you perform ALL of the 5 property tests? Data table - Organizes 5 properties you will test

3 Background Research Describe 3 significant pieces of information that are not commonly known about your topic. (mineral identification) Topic sentence states your topic 3 facts or pieces of information about your topic 3 explanations about those pieces of information Conclusion restates what your paragraph was about Don’t forget transitions

5 What 5 properties do you think will be the most useful?
I will test the following 5 properties: I chose these 5 properties because….

6 Act 16 – Lab report – guided answers Follow the procedure in the book through step 5.
Purpose: The purpose of this lab is to find out if our mineral is calcite or quartz AND determine which one would be better for making jewelery. Hypothesis: If I test, color, transparency, reaction with acid, hardness and luster, THEN I will be able to identify the mineral as _______ because…… Background Research: (use the article provided, BP or internet research) Variables Independent: What are you changing? Property tests Dependent: What are you finding out? The mineral

7 Answers cont… Materials: What materials will you need to test the 5 properties? Procedure: How will you perform ALL of the 5 property tests? Data table - Organizes 5 properties you will test Property Luster Hardness Transparency Acid color Mineral observations

8 Scientific Drawing example - Draw ALL your materials and label them!

9 Data Analysis Your topic sentence re-states the two variables and states the relationship between them. Your yellow sentences explain the results from each trial (you will have 5 yellow/pink sentences) Your pink sentences go into further detail describing how each property test helped you to identify the mineral You formally conclude the relationship between the two variables by stating which mineral you had. Don’t forget transitions

10 Data Analysis Example The relationship between [IV] and [DV] was___________________. First, I tested hardness by ______________. This helped me identify my mineral as _______ because _______________. **YOU WILL HAVE 4 MORE SETS OF YELLOW/PINK EXPLAINING HOW EACH PROPERTY TEST HELPED YOU TO IDENTIFY THE MINERAL. **** and a conclusion
