1 Mothering Sunday / Mother’s Day
‘Mothering Sunday’ is a Christian festival and it falls on the fourth Sunday of Lent every year. This year it will be the 26th March. The UK has celebrated it since the 16th Century. Today, churchgoers in England go to their nearest church to worship regularly. However, centuries ago people believed it was important to visit your ‘mother' church (the big city church) for a special service, once a year. It was common in the past for young children to work away from home as maids and servants. ‘Mothering Sunday’ was extra special because these children were allowed to visit their families. They would give a small gift to their mothers, like flowers. Today, churchgoers can still attend special services on Mothering Sunday, paying their respects to their mothers. It is still common for people in England to give their mothers, or woman who look after them, cards and flowers, and help with the house work on this day – even if they are not Christian! We also call this day Mother’s Day and shops in England use the holiday as an excuse to make money. They sell lots of gifts and cards specially for Mother’s Day.
